Fair point, I think the positive aspect of a beat writer is that it reaches people who are not USF fans or follow the program closely. Of course the paper media is not what it once was (I read the Boston Globe electronically), but at the same time, it is not completely it irrelevant either.

Agreed. Although there are still some of the human interest type articles in between game reports, it's not as many as there was with even a kind of dedicated writer ...... and the "paper" media isn't what it once was but agree again that it's definitely not irrelevant, no matter how much some think it is or want it to be.

And when some people want someone to rock the boat and to know how things really are, what they mean is they want a BM type to "dig" up the type stuff they can ***** and moan about.

As my dear departed mom used to say, "It's not about what you say, it's about how you say it." Some, I assume passionate fans, on here want to bash everything about USF athletics when in fact they're just like all of us and tired of losing. But, then again, when USF football goes bowling again next year there will be complaints about the bowl and the local news will still cover the gayturds as they always have.

No, but to ferret out scoops a dedicated best writer world be fantastic.

Why? A scoop is usually just getting a story earlier than when the parties had planned to release something so I've never really understood why the fascination ....... unless you're talking about scoops like the BM ferreted out when he was here. No thanks to that, too.

Our local paper, the Tampa Bay Times, still doesn't have a dedicated USF beat writer. I miss the days of Greg Auman and even the 'Stache, Brett McMurphy.

It will never have a dedicated beat writer again.  That ship has sailed.

To some extent, we're lucky we still even have a "local" paper... it's only a matter of time before they downsize further..

Call me naive, bit I think we will. Either athletics does enough to merit the beat writer, or enough folks complain about the lack of beat writer. I won't hold my breath on the latter.

I have a friend, alumni, that just left as the anchor on a major tv station in a local market. Called VPMK for an interview to essentially be an all encompassing writer, marketing, social media type guy. Never even got a return response.

It's not about USF... it's about declining subscription and advertising revenue... and a paper cutting staff everywhere possible.  If it wasn't owned by a non-profit, it might have folded last year.
