Sure that punt at SMU was indefensible but he has shown more towards being aggressive than not:

  • BYU went for it on 4th and 1 at our OWN 34 in the first quarter
  • Proceeded to go for it on 4th down 4 more times that game converting all of them and all those drives ending in scores
  • onside kick at the end of that game with 5 minutes left
  • converted a 4th down touchdown vs SMU when a field goal would have also made it a 2 score game
  • Gave us a chance at the end of the half to take a shot at the end zone before kicking the field goal. Hopefully Timmy learned his lesson to throw it away there if the first read isn't there.

I get bagging on him for that punt. But it's one conservative call, if that happens again sure it can be a trend. But as for now thats just as likely a one off mistake

It's pretty much been proven that the reality of situations doesn't get in some's way when it comes to CJS trashing. Only thing that's going to put a damper on their fun are some FBS wins ...

Agreed. I really don't see Scott being overly conservative at all, certainly nowhere near as conservative as Skip was.

It’s definitely my own prejudice, since the moment I saw him and heard his background I thought oh good a less qualified CSH. When you look at it through the lens of this is CSH redux addition there is plenty to line up and that he literally never wins doesn’t help with any of it. He had the benefit of the doubt for most people (not me in all fairness) but at some point that’s going to wear thin for anyone.

I hear we are pretty good at covering our large spreads, so we probably have a chance to cover, if it were +28 I’d definitely take us.

Skip actually did have success before he arrived here, and after, so maybe he was more qualified, but my goodness, the Holtz-Scott comparison is utterly depressing. The team just completely quit on Skip in his last year here. This year's team has shown a lot of fight. Just a lot of youth and a depleted defense.

BTW, that Miami game where Skip passed up on a couple of shots at the end zone, down 16-0, in favor of letting around 30 seconds run off to attempt the FG, they actually missed the short FG. Sums up his tenure here. Loved the win at Notre Dame, but can't forget that conservative nature of his. I'll take the potential I think I see in Scott over Skip any day.

Sounds about right if the bye week is an FBS team.

Since this thread is about realistic expectations, is it realistic  to expect a win over Tulsa next Saturday? Or is that aiming too high?

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
