Maybe you guys our right and CJS was simply fortune’s fool and there was really only one QB available 7 out of 9 games but it certainly looked like we were, since we obviously were not trying to win, trying to develop JM. That he is now with another team and we made no attempts to keep him certainly calls into question the purpose of the last year. If the only other option is a true freshman, why not get him some more game experience if you know JM is not your future?

He didn't necessarily need to be the "only "QB" available but the most consistently available. Offenses need rhythm and playing musical QBs is never a good option. So yeah maybe last year was a lost year from the QB perspective, unless you consider the fact that at the very least Fortin and Marsh got to learn the system, but, maybe the other offensive players that are coming back had a better chance at developing themselves due to there being some sort on continuity under center. I also agree on the Last posters comment on Fortin, I believe he was supposed to be scotts guy and it just couldn't get him healthy and available to develop any chemistry.

End of the day, there's so much we don't know about who was available day in and day out (not just on Saturday) to know for sure what was going on.

It doesn't call into question of the purpose of last year...I'll clear the white noise...we played last year for experience...for the players and the coaching...JM was the best available most of the time...either due to contact tracing or injuries...simple as that...that true freshman was hurt at multiple points last year...I know in the Houston game he was injured and Cinci he may have gotten hurt as well...not sure on that point though and I think he was part of the contact tracing at some point during the season on top of it...If I were a betting man and Fortin wasn't affected by Covid and injuries, he would have been our starter last year...

I just question why if the sole goal was experience we invested a good portion of that experience at key positions in people that are no longer with the program. We threw away last season but that does not mean that we had to. As certain as you are that Fortin would have been the starter I’m equally as certain that it would have been JM. CJS seems like a nice, take the path of least resistance and do not make any waves kind of guy and I think JM looked like the safest call to him.

Well this year we know for certain JM will not be a part of the equation, hopefully we see a better direction with CJS’ players.

It's a fair question...my guess is they didn't know if a lot of those players would leave...and to play that season and get that experience...a lot of the guys that left had to play...I could tell you JM wasn't the best by a good amount, and I was actually a huge JM cheerleader at first...but then I had plenty of film of the guy and changed that tune...

My take? Along the lines of some of the other sentiment/speculation. We got 2 seasons of JMc for bad or for worse. I think CJS is close to that family. I think he gave him a good shot at being the guy. Plenty of time to show his skills and his command of the offense. What do we remember best...the last game. Best game he ever played for USF. But, the writing was prob on the wall- he isn't the caliber QB you need to move on and win. Poss the other QB trans was out there. Fortin came into the one game and took off only to get hurt. Nobody can say that JMc didn't get his shot. Obviously AZ saw something in him and took the chance. It will be interesting to see how he does there. I think CJS is building a team with big, strong players at all positions. As always, time will tell.

I don’t think the problem is necessarily that he left because that’s a variable you can’t completely control the problem is that you should have known that you shouldn’t be giving all the experience to a guy that you know you wouldn’t care if they tried to leave (because what’s the point?).

This. When we play out of conference, I almost expect us to be smaller but nimble. This past season, I started noticing how much smaller we were compared to our conference brethren. Not even the most skillful coaching can combat an across the board size disadvantage and lack of depth like that.

We've had that problem for many years. CJS in all likelihood is trying to build a team much like what he knows from Clemson. Big line, receivers, qb, etc

To win games and, rightly or wrongly, CJS thought JM was their best available qb to do that in the games he started ......... it's really just that simple.

That would be a lot simpler to swallow if we actually won some games, did not make coaching decisions that looked that we didn’t care about winning, did not say things like it was a throw away year and did not say we were just trying to build for the future and learn about our team and staff. If that was our attempt at actually giving ourselves the best chance to win that’s sad.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
