Googled and read several Texas Tech media articles on Big Russ. They all basically say the same thing: he’s a project, but one they hoped they’d be able to keep because he showed definite flashes at times.

7 footers should be dunking virtually any time they are around the basket. There were several instances in the highlight package where he finished soft and was surprised he didn't flush it. The AAC has some superior defensive teams and the lack of explosiveness and playing low to the ground will put a ceiling on his effectiveness around the basket.

Looked again and definitely saw the instances you were talking about but there were a couple of times that he did flush it and I just don't think those dunks have the same explosive effect as a smaller guy having to elevate to put it down. I was more impressed with the contested drives to the basket where he had to improvise with a reverse layup or stepped out with a little 5 or 6 footer ..... of course we're basing all this on a 4 minute highlight clip out of 117minutes played so the hell knows but he definitely passes the initial eye test.

Having watched plenty of Tech this year it pains me to say it but brybull nailed it.  He plays very small for someone with his size and the bulk of this tape is garbage time.  He is a project and may plug a hole but I am not doing back flips over this signing.  We really need someone to develop this kid, however right now Yetna is king, Durr is a prince In-law and this kid is part of the proletariat class.

Good call out on the reverse lay ups - this also makes me believe he played the 3 or 4 when he was younger and went through a a growth spurt.

Yeah, definitely reinforces that. Totally amazed when guys can adjust like that on the fly and actually finish. It's one of the things I love about DC and the highlights we've seen of Murphy show that same type ability to adjust and finish........................ Also have to remember that we just saw 4 minutes of Russel. The other 113 could be primarily a **** show but I do feel better at that position than I did a week ago

If he was a junior or higher coming in I'd be a little more concerned at the skill level he may be at but there's time to work on that project ...... It'd be nice to always find an RAJ in that portal.

I guess the question is do we like him better than Mack or Okpom?. After seeing the video I view this as an upgrade.

Absolutely agree. I had hope for Mack, but Okpomo was signed just to add size. He is a total project.

Same. I think he has a higher ceiling than either who were both projects too. It's just a matter of what our S&C and coaching can getting out of him. You can't teach his size and athleticism combo so let's see what the coaches can mold that into. It's probably best if he doesn't get a waiver and redshirts imo

Pros and cons of he and/or Oduro not getting a waiver. Pro is obviously longer time with program to develop. Con is that right now, whenever this season starts, until Anderson is eligible in December we've only got three players taller than 6' 6". I know we've got some athleticism with those "smaller" guys but it'd be nice having a little more height for the ooc schedule to help get a good start on DC and JB's final year ...
