'Canes fire defensive line coach Mark

By Omar Kelly

CORAL GABLES -- The Miami Hurricanes have fired Greg Mark, who has coached UM's defensive line since 1996, according to numerous sources.

UM officials would neither confirm nor deny his removal, but Miami's players were told about his dismissal on Monday afternoon.

After starring at UM during the late 1980's, becoming a former All-American who led Miami's 1989 national championship team with 15.5 sacks, Mark played two seasons in the NFL before entering the coaching ranks in 1992.

He spent two seasons as a UM graduate assistant before moving on to Utah State as a full-time defensive line coach in 1995. In 1996 the Hurricanes brought him back, and he worked with UM's front line for nearly a decade.

During his UM tenure, he developed the talent of six players -Warren Sapp, Kenard Lang, Kenny Holmes, Damione Lewis, William Joseph and Vince Wilfork - who have gone on to become first-round selections in the NFL draft.

Calls to Mark's home were not returned.

With only eight assistants on staff it's likely the Hurricanes will move quickly to add another coach.

Possible replacements mentioned are Clint Hurtt, a former player and graduate assistant who is presently the defensive line coach at Florida International. If coach Larry Coker wants to remain within the UM family, it's also possible that former UM and NFL standouts Cortez Kennedy and Russell Maryland will get a look.

While Sileo is a homer, he's no coach.

The 'rumor' is he got into an arguement with Paul Dee the A.D. on the plane ride back from Philly (Temple).  You don't just fire a coach of this caliber because you like somone else better.

Greg will have no problem finding another job but the CANES will miss him.

According to sileo, Mark has been fighting "personal demons" for a longtime but he wouldn't elaborate.

Furthermore, USF's problems are not on the defensive side of the ball....
