HAZARD QB OFF THE CHARTS

Hazard quarterback Durrell Olinger is having a remarkable season throwing the football.

How remarkable?

Olinger is off the charts when his statistics are plugged into the NCAA's formula for determining pass efficiency. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound senior has completed 80 of 104 passes for 1,958 yards and 23 touchdowns and no interceptions for the unbeaten Bulldogs. Those numbers give him a mind-boggling NCAA rating of 308.05. To put that number into perspective, the NCAA record for pass efficiency in a season is 183.3, set by Tulane's Shaun King in 1998. Drew Stanton of Michigan State leads the NCAA this year with a rating of 190.1.

Kentucky high school legends Tim Couch and Brian Brohm had terrific junior years -- Couch hit a record 75 percent of his passes, and Brohm had only one interception -- but neither came close to a 300 rating.

Mr. Football hopefuls Justin Burke of Lexington Catholic and Will Fidler of Henderson County are having big senior years, but neither has a 200 rating.

Olinger has benefited from Hazard's weak schedule, but as Coach Mark Dixon said, "He's completing about 80 percent of his passes, and that's hard to do even in practice. Durrell makes good decisions, he puts the ball where it can be caught, and he's got good receivers."

The NCAA formula for pass efficiency is based on completion percentage, yards gained per pass attempt, and TDs, with a deduction for interceptions.
