Bulls win game 3 4-2. Take the series 2-1

This is a good start relatively.   Marist was receivng votes.  So not a bad team.

Offense looks like will be our downfall.

Maybe someone can start drawing up pictures, cutting and pasting stats, and creating multiple threads about how bad our offense is .....

Ragsdale Strikes Out Ten in Series Finale Against Marist

Carson Ragsdale delivers a stellar performance to take the rubber match against Marist, 6-4.

TAMPA (Feb. 16, 2020) – Carson Ragsdale's (Wesley Chapel, Fla.)  stellar performance helped USF win its first series of the season on Sunday afternoon.

Head coach Billy Mohl's Bulls (2-1) scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the rubber match, 4-2, at USF Baseball Stadium.

Ragsdale was solid in his first start on the mound since returning from Tommy John surgery. Ragsdale held the Red Foxes scoreless through five frames before allowing one run, finishing with 10 strikeouts in six innings.

Marist (1-2) put pressure on the Bulls pitching staff by loading the bases with no outs in the top of the eighth. Dylan Burns (Vero Beach, Fla.) came in for relief and escaped the jam, retiring three of four batters faced.

Burns would earn his first save of the season after allowing one hit through two innings of work.

Nick Gonzales (Weston, Fla.) came up big for the Bulls in the bottom of the fourth, hitting a two-run double to left-center, scoring Dylan Buck (Lakewood Ranch, Fla.) and Julio Cortez (Weston, Fla.).

Quotable

Coach Billy Mohl on Carson Ragsdale's performance:

"He was really good. His fastball was exploding out of his hand and he had his breaking ball going. It was a two-pitch mix today where he got us through six innings and we kept him at 80 pitches. It was good to see him back out there, we really missed him."

Notable

·   Carmine Lane finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.

·   Orion Kerkering pitched one inning of relief striking out two batters

·   Nick Gonzalez is currently on a three game hitting streak.

Up Next

The Bulls head to Tallahassee for back-to-back midweek games against Florida A&M and #14 Florida State.

Kerkering looked a little rough in his 2nd inning, but overall the pitching was outstanding this weekend.

Glad pitching should be good, but why can't this guy recruit good offensive players?  There is a TON of offensive talent in the state of Florida.

Not really looking for an answer, just venting!

As I said in an earlier post, we’re going to find out that Mohl is a good pitching coach and not much more. You can win with great pitching - IF your offense is marginal. It won’t happen if it’s sub-par like ours appears to be. You’re not going to win many games when you only get two hits like they did yesterday.

Good pitching beats good hitting every day of the week - it’s simply harder to hit a baseball than to throw one.

That said, a top pitching staff with some timely hitting mixed in (think of the Rays or A’s) and the team can be pretty deadly.

The key is how good are the arms on this team and who can come up with some clutch base knocks with RISP.

Losing 5 - 1 to FAMU through 6.  Stuart lit up on the mound and of course we still can't hit.

Well we do have 6 hits so far, just all singles and I guess not so timely.  Maybe we can rally

True to an extent, but this is college baseball and with the metal bats even the best pitching is going to get hit at times and we're not exactly seeing timely hitting even so far
