I had the same argument with a hobo the other day on Nebraska. I gave him a bottle of water and he asked if I was giving it to him for "free." I then lectured him on the same points you're making and explained the ins and outs of capitalism and how that water represented an actual amount of work I had done in order to purchase said bottle of water, not to mention the gas I purchased to drive to where he was. I then explained that my time was being used to have the conversation and that each moment we spent in the discussion was time I was not spending earning more money. He agreed that the bottle of water I gave him was not "free" and then we both read some Adam Smith together.

Nebraska? Are you sure you were talking to a hobo and not engaging in one of the original ins and outs of capitalism?

This story does check out as I did meet a hobo yesterday that was rambling about Adam Smith wile holding a bottle of not free water. I started to talk to him about Ayn Rand and then smacked the bottle of water out of his hand, he thanked me for freeing him from the shackles you tried to impose on him by giving water he did not earn.

Quite a few are older than the typical college student age, too.

And I thought we were just making dumb posts despite both of us knowing what each of us meant. You know, like saying a student who goes to one of the military academies for "free" isn't really going for "free" because their parents pay federal taxes. Same for any USF student who gets a scholarship that covers their entire cost of attendance.

I loved to throw this at people when I was working for the State of NJ.  I'd get the line "I pay your salary" and I always followed with "Yes, so do I"
