IIRC you don't have to be a Mormon to attend BYU.

You do not. But, anyone who's a is a practicing Mormon, and keeps up with their tithing, can attend for free.

I'll edit my own post to make @puc86 happy. If you are not a member of the Church you pay x amount of dollars. If you are a member of the LDS church who has paid an amount in said tithing that your local bishop is ok with, you pay less than x amount of dollars directly to the University at the time of enrollment at BYU.

So if you pay you can attend for free?

Just like if you pay all of your taxes to the state of Florida, you get to go to a Florida state college for a lower price.

Yes.

I always thought free meant without cost or payment and that when you are required to pay something in order to get something then it meant it was not free, you learn a new thing every day I guess.

And I thought we were just making dumb posts despite both of us knowing what each of us meant. You know, like saying a student who goes to one of the military academies for "free" isn't really going for "free" because their parents pay federal taxes. Same for any USF student who gets a scholarship that covers their entire cost of attendance.

I feel like that’s a smidge different. If their parents stopped paying taxes are they yanked from the academy? Or if their parents don’t even live in this country and have never paid taxes would they be intelligible? Also of course I know what you mean and I do not actually care about this topic or fight it’s just slow going’s around here.

If a student's parents paid even $0.01 in taxes to the U.S. government, some fraction of that penny was allotted to the military academies.
