GAME DAY vs SMU

USF returns to Raymond James Stadium after its first bye week of the season to face SMU, one of 23 unbeaten teams in FBS and coming off a 41-38 victory at No. 25 TCU. Charlie Strong recruited and coached SMU QB Shane Buechele at Texas prior to both leaving. The Bulls are 4-0 under Strong following a bye week. USF had just one bye week last season, defeating UMass (58-42) following it, after three in Strong’s first year. The Bulls have won 21 of their last 27 home games. Strong is 16-8 overall in American Conference competition.

CONFERENCE OPENER: USF has won its first two conference openers under Strong, both at home, and is 5-1 all-time in American conference openers and 10-6 overall. The Bulls have won three straight conference openers, last falling at home vs. Memphis (24-17) in 2015.

SET THE EXPECTATION: Coach Strong welcomed Brenda Tracy during fall camp to deliver a powerful address to the team on surviving sexual violence and its devastating impacts on society. Following the presentation the team set Sept. 28 as the team’s “Set the Expectation” game to help bring awareness and lead the way in preventing sexual violence and will wear special helmet decals signify their commitment and Tracy will help conduct the coin toss.

NATIONAL DEFENSIVE LEADERS: Following a USF record setting eight takeaways vs. SC State, the Bulls rank No. 1 nationally with 11 turnovers forced, No. 1 in fumbles recovered (7) and No. 2 in turnover margin (2.00).

FORD FUSION: Tabbed as “our man beater” by OC Kerwin Bell, Johnny Ford’s transition from running back to wide receiver has hit full fusion as he leads the Bulls in receiving despite playing in just two of USF’s three games. He exploded for a pair of touchdowns vs. SC State, including a 42-yard touchdown reception and a 32-yard touchdown run, and posted his first career 100-yard receiving game (4 catches, 100 yards, 1 TD).

No idea what to expect, anytime you have a fragile psyche we need to get off to a good start, if not the wheels can come off quickly vs a good team.
