You had to wait until a player got his release. However, this was often worked around by both sides with high school coaches, family members, handlers/street agents doing the fishing before players officially got their release. Essentially the only diffenece now is they can do that above board before officially requesting their release and their names goes into a database.

Pre-portal, schools couldn’t contact players until they were released. As mentioned above, there was always ‘informal contact’ even before the player was released.

Before the portal transfer players just showed up on campus and hoped....

I heard they just ran on the field in the middle of 40 testing and raced against the guy running. If they won the got a roster spot

Only if they were in bed just before-hand. That's the key.
