I love that in reason #3 he puts this:

There’s also the not insignificant fact that no one watches Big East basketball on TV. Except for Villanova, the games get test pattern ratings. We’re talking five-digit viewership.

Not many people on here remember test patterns.  For you youngsters, TV programming wasn't 24 hours/day.  At the end of the broadcast day the networks (only 3) put a test pattern up until the next morning.

And a rousing rendition of the National Anthem and picture of the flag preceding the test pattern.  Although, the test pattern was a very popular show back in the Sixties.  We watched it for hours

The more I ponder the issue, I wonder if Boise State's deal with the MWC could ultimately lead to them wanting to join the AAC. As it stands, BSU makes about $3 million annually, while the rest of the MWC teams make only $1.1 million. In a desperate attempt to keep the conference in tact the last time the winds of expansion were blowing, the MWC allowed BSU to retain exclusive rights to its home football games in PERPETUITY! BSU and their 4 conference road games add very little value to the MWC contract, which many predict won't net much more than the current TV deal.

I don't know that BSU will see a bump in the asking price for their 6 home games per year. Would BSU be willing to bring just their football program to the AAC in exchange for $4 million annually? They could have the rest of their sports remain in the MWC or move them to the WAC. In that scenario, the AAC nabs the best G5 program available and each conference team still makes an extra $300,000 annually out of the deal.

For competitive balance you move Navy from the West to the East and BSU takes their place in the West. You would have BSU, Houston, Memphis and SMU/Tulane competing at the top of the West and UCF, USF, Cincy, and Temple at the top of the East.  I could get behind that setup.

Just wonder if they would be OK putting themselves on such a big island (no conference opponents even remotely close).  I think if you want Boise, you figure out what 14 team expansion works for atleast keeping the conference contract at the same per team.   Maybe adding Boise, Colorado State, and BYU (and if you can't entice them, then Air Force)

It shouldn't matter to Boise at all for football only. As of right now, they really don't have any natural rivals. Travel costs would be accounted for in the $4 million they would be getting for their football only participation. We are talking about travel for only 4 games per season. It should really be a non-issue. There isn't enough quality out there to justify going to 14 teams. If you add anyone else (aside from maybe BYU or Navy) you are just diluting the product and the money we would split as a conference with no real financial return.

The only way we add is if there is a financial benefit to it.  If ESPN isn't willing to pony up anymore money per school, you won't see expansion.

Correct. If the mothership wants expansion then it will happen.

Boise State for football only seems like a no-brainer if they can get someone (WAC, WCC) to take their Olympic sports.

They would make more money, the additional travel wouldn't be that significant. They would only be going over to USF/UCF/ECU once every 4 years.

The conference would have better matchups. I would much rather watch BSU play USF, UCF, UH, Memphis and Navy versus SDSU and Fresno State.

That's what the Big 12, Big 10 and ACC are saying about us.

True... but it’s a lot more fun saying it ourselves about someone else for once.
