Once homeless, graduating DeLand senior’s future looks brighter

By Chris Boyle

Posted May 28, 2019 at 7:37 PMUpdated May 28, 2019 at 7:39 PM

Demaurez Bellamy is set to graduate from DeLand High School on Wednesday night with honors and depart for the University of South Florida on a football scholarship.

The world appears to be in the palm of his hands.

Like a lot of graduates, he dreams of a time when he can guarantee financial security for future generations in his family, never wanting any of his loved ones to struggle.

“It’s bigger than myself. I can’t really think about myself,” Bellamy said. “If I make it, it’s generation money, stability and having a real foundation.”

Stable footing has been hard to find for Bellamy in his four-year high school tenure. He attended three different schools, his living arrangements shuffling on a sometimes weekly basis while he bounced between homes of parents, relatives, coaches, teachers and friends.

On some occasions, he had nowhere to stay at all — sleeping outside on a bench or on a lounge chair at the pool deck of a nearby apartment complex.

Rest of Story

“When I get to USF, this is going to be the first bed I’ve had in three years,” Bellamy said.

Thanks for posting Brad. My weekly views of TBT articles were up since they moved to a paywall...feel like I am in 1975 USSR waiting in line for toilet paper.

Loved this kids film and now I love him as a person. Nothing is better than watching USF change the lives of kids like him for the the better. I hope he kills it at USF on and off the field

I've often wondered if I was a multi millionaire, why would I give millions to a Universities Athletic department instead of helping sick kids or something similar.   This story (and I'm sure it's more common then you think) would help me justify it somewhat.

Collegiate sports helps tens of thousands.  You’re just subjected to the “making millions off their backs” false argument.

I’m in this cat’s corner.

Absolutely a fantastic story and safe to say we are all rooting for the kid to make it.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
