The defense was never the same once Sawtelle went down....there were other injuries too and youth and some bad techniques took its toll.

But Sawtelle shoulders no blame for defense being bad last year imo.  Look at the before and after.

Is he a senior or is he coming back next year healthy?

Not good logic...the whole d was terrible and he has a share of it...especially runs up the middle....at least 33% of those. I know you want to blame the coaches, but a lot was on execution.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

"Injuries and youth took its toll and Sawtelle does not shoulder any of the blame for last year's defense."

Applying the definition of logic.

log·ic
/ˈläjik/
noun
  1. 1.
reasoning conducted or assessed according to strict principles of validity.
"experience is a better guide to this than deductive logic"
synonyms: science of reasoning, science of deduction, science of thought, dialectics, argumentation, ratiocination
    "the study of logic"
  2. 2.
a system or set of principles underlying the arrangements of elements in a computer or electronic device so as to perform a specified task.

If Sawtelle had a significant role in the defense the he must shoulder some of the blame...maybe we were not watching the same defense getting gashed up the middle when Sawtelle routinely took wrong angles and filled the wrong the gaps. With all that being stated, the logic definition stands.

You defended those same coaches until the writing was on the wall that they were going to be gone because they were "Charlies Guys"  then immediately changed your tune about them.  You spent how long telling us how it was all the players and Gilbert was this great OC?  Pepperidge farm remembers.

You didn't appear old enough to remember that when we met.

Your definition of logic mentions "validity". Nothing you've said about Nico have you provided "validity" for, just opinions. Facts are we were 1-6 without him, giving up 70 rushing yards more per game.

So we were solid in the run defense with him?

Clearly, we were better with him than we were without him.

Solid enough on defense to go 6-0. Whether it was him, overall competition, whatever .... there's no way to tell. I think the Nico as a weak link myth is up there with the 2017 hb dive offense myth.

Our defense was better with Nico in it. If nothing else, it allowed arguably our best DE to play DE.

So you accept the rushing yards in the following games as a standard?

GT 419

Ill 212

Elon 192

UConn 322

tulsa 220

ECU 156

If you have accepted this as a standard because we won then we are in big trouble. We had a dang safety playing LB and Sawtelle in the middle. The whole corp needed upgrading and size. I think the right moves were made on the D as a whole, thanks to the portal and emphasis on weight training. The LBs were right there as the worst with the secondary and now both should be night and day different with the help of the transfers and Boyles and Greer stepping up to take the positions on the depth chart along with Mason coming in. Mason will be a day 1 starter along with Studstill.

Mason will be like Barnett. I actually think Sawtelle will be 3rd on the depth chart to start the season. CCS will call it injury related, but the fact is that he will be passed over. Roberts and Sanders will have to find some playing time this year. To be honest, I think CCS will keep using to portal to fill the depth chart. We were that low on talent and it's a great way to get some players that have a higher upside on the field.

Now...I will say this, taking on Texas next year will be not problem. I like Battle and McCloud. Just need to keep Kerwin Bell in place. Need some RB's to come in next year and another explosive outside receiver. The slot seems really good, but not sure about St. Felix or Roland. I'm looking for a dominant outside guy and not sure if we have one on the roster.

The Oline should get fixed by Bell and maybe the portal can fix it. Hobble looked good in the Spring Game.

I'm calling the upset against whiskey...I think we will actually have help from the #2 QB to win it. I think the Defense is adequate if we put Studstill at strong safety in the box...Burnette at a corner....and Hampton and Lapointe.

I'm all in at 11-2

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
