Bulls Split Final Two Games of War on I-4 Series

After losing the continuation of Game Two, USF took the finale, 6-3

ORLANDO, FLA., April 7, 2019 – The USF baseball team took the finale of the War on I-4 weekend series, 6-3, and split the final two games that were both finished Sunday.

In Game Two on Saturday, the Bulls (14-16, 2-7 The American) were batting in the top of the seventh and had a runner on first with one out, trailing, 5-0, when the game was stopped due to weather. The action resumed with freshman Alex Bello (Miami) at first and Joe Genord (Lake Worth, Fla.) at the plate Sunday morning.

After play resumed Sunday, the Bulls loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but stranded three. USF couldn’t muster much in the final two innings.

The first two runners got on for the Knights (20-12, 3-6 The American) in the bottom of the first, and the lead runner eventually scored to put the Bulls behind early. The lead extended in the second with two RBI base hits, making it 3-0. UCF scored in the third and fifth to claim a 5-0 edge.

In Game Three Sunday afternoon, the Knights scored in the first inning for the third straight game, plating two on a two-out double. The Bulls responded in the top of the second, loading the bases with no outs. Chris Chatfield (Riverview, Fla.) and Nick Gonzalez (Tampa) each walked to tie the game at 2-2. Jordan Santos (Tampa) used a sac fly to center to bring in Tyler Dietrich (Naples, Fla.), putting USF ahead.

USF played small ball again in the fourth, as Chatfield walked for the second time to lead off the frame. Gonzalez reached on a bunt, then he and Chatfield were moved into scoring position. Santos drove in his second run with his second sac fly, bringing in Chatfield to make it 4-2.

After a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth made it 4-3, USF brought in junior lefty Noah Yager (Davie, Fla.), who was able to keep the Knights off the board. Senior Kyle Phillips (Orlando) singled in the top of the seventh, bringing up classmate Joe Genord (Lake Worth, Fla.), who smashed a two-run shot to left, making it 6-3.

Yager continued to record outs, as he needed just 36 pitches to retire 12 in four scoreless innings. Nelson Alvarez (Miami) pitched a clean ninth to close the door, earning his fifth save.

Key Stats

39 – Genord’s ninth home run of the season and his 39th career long ball, moving him into sole possession of fourth on USF’s all-time list.

Nota-Bulls

·   Genord went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI.

·   Chatfield had a single, two walks, a run and a RBI.

·   Bello hit in each game of the series and has a five-game hit streak.

·   The USF bullpen was outstanding all weekend, combining to throw 15.0 innings, allowing just one run on nine hits.

·   Redshirt junior righty Dylan Burns (Vero Beach, Fla.) tossed six innings out of the bullpen on Friday, striking out four and allowing just one run. Logan Lyle (Bartow, Fla.) pitched 4.0 scoreless in Game Two, before Yager and Alvarez limited the Knights to just three hits in the finale.

Glad we avoided the sweep.  These Gnats are really getting annoying now and it’s in every sport.  This needs to change soon.
