Bulls Head to DeLand for Midweek Matchup With Hatters

I think that stance has been noted at this point. Feel free to ignore the team the rest of the season, but I'm gonna keep posting and looking at the bright side. This team can still steal some series this season. Mid-weeks are tough due to the pitching depth after the injuries. We also have this knack for playing awkward lineups on midweeks. Hoping Phillips isn't hurt after he left tonight.

Bulls Outhit Hatters in 10-9 Loss Wednesday in DeLand  

Joe Genord went 4-for-5 with two homers and four RBI 

DELAND, FLA., MARCH 27, 2019 – The USF baseball team led early, but fell behind and couldn’t complete the comeback in a high scoring affair, falling to Stetson, 10-9, Wednesday.

 

The Bulls (12-11, 1-2 The American) jumped out early with extra-base hits in the first. Senior Kyle Phillips (Orlando) doubled, then classmate Joe Genord (Lake Worth, Fla.) hit his sixth home run of the year to make it 2-0. 

 

Junior Austin Bodrato (Northvale, N.J.) worked a walk, stole second, then got brought home with an RBI double off the bat of Jake Sullivan (Tampa), making it 3-0 after one. USF threatened again in the second, loaded the bases with one out before scoring twice more.

 

The 5-0 lead didn’t last long, as the Hatters erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the second to gain control. The Bulls got one back on Genord’s second home run in the top of the fourth, but Stetson answered with two more runs to make it 9-6 heading into the fifth.

 

The Bulls cut into the deficit in the fifth with an RBI single from junior Jordan Santos (Tampa), scoring freshman Nick Gonzalez (Tampa). With runners on the corners, Stetson brought in pre-season All-American Mitchell Senger out of the bullpen. The lefty struck out four-straight to hold a two-run lead into the seventh.

 

Gonzalez led off the frame with a walk, then got himself to third on a stolen base before scoring on a throwing error to make it 9-8. USF again had runners on the corners with two away, but failed to tie things. 

 

After Stetson struck again in the bottom of the seventh, USF drew within one for the final time in the eighth on a Tyler Dietrich (Naples, Fla.) RBI double. But he Hatters retired the Bulls in order in the ninth.

2 – Sullivan’s first game with two doubles. 
7 – Genord has seven homers this season and 38 for his career. 
4 – It was Genord’s second game with a career high four hits this season. 

Nota-Bulls

·   It’s the third time in Genord’s career that he has hit two home runs in a game.

·   Genord needs just one more home run to move into fourth place on USF’s all-time list.

·   It was the eighth game with double-digit hits this season (12).

·   Senior Kyle Phillips (Orlando) had two hits for the fifth-straight game.

·   Gonzalez scored runs.

We have always seem to have had a tough time with Stetson.  They have a pretty strong baseball program over there.

They aren't as good this year as they have been in the past. They lost 4 four or so pitchers to the draft (and we thought we lost a lot). This was just the second week in a row that the midweek starter dug us in a hole that we couldn't get out of.

CBM sums it up the pitching issues pretty good here. 

“Alec Wisely and Collin Sullivan have been really good for us,” Mohl said. “Wisely’s first outing of the year was a bit shaky but he has gotten better ever since, going seven innings in his last two starts.”

(Worth  noting, had he not gone out for the seventh against UC, Wisley would have had 6.0 IP with no runs.) 

“The third guy is Ben Koff,” Mohl said. “He has been dealing with a nagging injury. He is our Sunday guy. Baron Stuart has been out for a little bit with a pinched nerve in his elbow, but we are expecting to have him back in the next week or two.”

Getting both Koff and Stuart back from injuries could be the solution to what Mohl says is one of the problems with his starting rotation. 

“Midweek is kind of a black hole for us right now,” Mohl said. “We are trying to find someone.”

Nothing to do with pitching but i liked the quote, 

“This whole league the past few years, the top-four teams have been separated by a 1.5 games,” Mohl said. “ It’s tough up and down … we have shown we have the ability to go up against anybody.”

Seems like this is said almost every time we lose to a smaller Florida school....
