Bulls Travel To Jacksonville for Matchup with Ospreys Tuesday
This is the final game before American Athletic Conference action begins Friday

TAMPA, March 18, 2019 – The USF baseball team heads back to Jacksonville for the second time in the last week, taking on North Florida Tuesday night.

The Bulls (11-7) swept their second weekend series of the year, taking three games against Dartmouth over the weekend. USF scored 27 runs and allowed just five in the three games. USF won, 16-1, on Saturday, tallying a season high 14 hits.

The 16 runs matched the most for USF since scoring 19 in 2014. The Bulls scored 16 against Bethune-Cookman last season, also winning that game 16-1. The two 15-run margins of victory are the most since a 19-1 win over Penn State in 2014.

Senior Joe Genord (Lake Worth, Fla.) hit .529 last week and was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll for the second time on Monday. Junior Austin Bodrato (Northvale, N.J.) had eight RBI over the weekend against the Big Green.

Junior right hander Ben Koff (Gainesville, Fla.) and lefty Noah Yager (Davie, Fla.) did not allow a walk in Sunday’s 4-1 win. It was just the third time since the start of 2018 that USF has not issued a walk.

Righty Dylan Burns (Vero Beach, Fla.) will get the ball Tuesday in Jacksonville. He went a career long 5.0 innings last Wednesday at Bethune-Cookman in his second start.

The Matchup

The Bulls lead the all-time series with the Ospreys, 10-7. The Bulls are 7-4 against UNF in Tampa and have won four-straight meetings.

Know the Foe
The Ospreys are 13-9 on the year, leading the ASUN in hits, doubles and double plays. Senior infielder Jay Prather leads the offense with a .384 average, and he’s 11th nationally with 33 hits. He has 18 RBI and a team high 21 runs.

Senior right hander Trace Norkus will get the start for UNF. He’s 1-0 with a 3.46 ERA and 19 strikeouts. Closer Eddie Miller is 13th in the country with five saves. He hasn’t allowed a run in 17.2 innings.

Nota-Bulls

·   The Bulls are 16th nationally with 1.17 home runs per game.

·   11 different Bulls have home runs this season.

·   Junior Jordan Santos (Tampa) is 29th in the country and tops in The American with 1.09 walks per game, leading the team and conference with 18.

Bulls Bits

·   DID YOU KNOW?: USF has the only Division I coaching staff in the state of Florida in which every member was selected in the MLB Draft – head coach Billy Mohl (2006, Philadelphia); assistants Chuck Jeroloman (2004, Boston), Chris Cates (2007, Minnesota), Brian Jeroloman(2006, Toronto). The Bulls' coaching staff has a combined 25 years of playing experience in pro baseball.

Burns struggles to find the zone to start the game. Bulls are down 3-0 heading into the third. Zech throws a dart to get a runner trying to go first to third to get us out of the second. This game has a camera angle behind the pitcher. I think its the first time I've seen that with Cruz, he has some nasty movement on his ball.

Took Cruz out for Marini, who walked three gave up a hit and threw two that Wilt Chamberlin would have struggled to catch and now its 6-0 UNF. Eason now in the game

Genord absolutely crushed a ball just foul. Would have been a three-run shot. Ended up with a walk, bases juiced no one out.

Burns and Marini need to never take the mound again.

Definitely pitched us out of this one. Combined for 1 IP, 5 BB, 2 HBP, 3 hits, and 6 ER. Burns has been struggling all year. Marini was **** near uncatchable tonight, threw in two runs on WP.

I think I'm going to sleep on this season. There's nothing much to see here.

This team has had one rough weekend. Tonight was just a weekday game and the guys that will pitch in conference play didn't do bad. We gave a few starters the night off. Joe was a couple of feet from making it a one-run game at one point. Can't really take much from this tonight.

Bulls Drop Midweek Tilt at UNF Tuesday

USF matched the Ospreys with eight hits

JACKSONVILLE, FLA., MARCH 19, 2019 – Despite eight hits for both sides, the USF baseball team dropped Tuesday night’s midweek matchup at North Florida, 7-2.

The Bulls (11-8) were playing from behind early on, as the Ospreys (14-9) scored three runs in the first. USF didn’t tally its first hit until a Kyle Phillips (Orlando) single to lead off the top of the fourth.

UNF doubled its lead with another three-spot in the bottom of the inning on just one hit. The Bulls finally threatened in the top of the sixth. Jordan Santos (Tampa) led off the inning with a walk, then Phillips beat out an infield single.

Classmate Joe Genord (Lake Worth, Fla.) walked to load the bags with no outs. Two batters later, redshirt sophomore Jake Sullivan (Tampa) drove a sac fly to center, scoring Santos to make it 6-1.

USF cut into the lead in the seventh, as Garrett Zech (Naples, Fla.) doubled down the left field line to move Alex Bello (Miami) to third. Santos grounded out, but it allowed Bello to score and make it 6-2. The Bulls had another opportunity in the top of the eighth with the bases load, but could not bring in a run. UNF was able to add to the edge with a run in the bottom half to attain another five-run lead.

Zech led off the ninth with his second double, but that was all the Bulls would get.

Key Stats

2 – Phillips, Zech and junior Austin Bodrato (Northvale, N.J.) each had two hits apiece.

Nota-Bulls

·   Zech’s two doubles were a career high.

·   Bodrato has hit in four-straight games, three being multi-hit games.

·   Santos worked his conference best 19th walk of the season.

Up Next

The Bulls begin American Athletic Conference action Friday at home with a three-game series against Cincinnati. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

I'm watching this team like you are. I don't see them doing a whole lot in conference play. Hope I'm wrong. Looks like maybe a .500 team to me.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
