Bulls Get Ready for Series Against Dartmouth  
This will be the last weekend series before conference play begins on March 22

TAMPA, March 14, 2019 – The USF baseball team welcomes Dartmouth to Tampa for a three-game series beginning Friday at 7 p.m. 

The Bulls (8-7) split a pair of road midweek games, dropping a 8-7 slugfest at Jacksonville Tuesday before knocking off Bethune-Cookman in extra innings Wednesday. Senior first baseman Joe Genord (Lake Worth, Fla.) hit a two-run homer in the top of the 10^th Wednesday to give the Bulls their first lead and the eventual win. Classmate Tyler Dietrich (Naples, Fla.) hit a two-run shot of his own in that frame and junior right-hander Nelson Alvarez (Miami) struck out seven in the final 2.1 to pick up his third win. 

Genord is batting .444 in the last five games and leads the team with a .370 average, five home runs and 15 RBI. He had four hits against the Wildcats in the win to set a new career high.

The Bulls will again go with junior righty Collin Sullivan (Randolph, Mass.) on Friday, who leads the team with 29 strikeouts. Senior righty Alec Wisely (Jacksonville) had his best start in the second game against Liberty last weekend, tossing 7.0 innings to match a career high in a USF uniform. He’ll start Saturday, and junior right hander Ben Koff (Gainesville, Fla.) will get the ball on Sunday, making his second start. Koff has walked four and has 15 strikeouts in 13.1 innings this year. 

The Matchup

The Bulls own a 4-0 lead in the all-time series against Dartmouth. The Big Green were in Tampa in 2016 for a three-game series, as the Bulls took 2-of-3. USF is outscoring Dartmouth, 15-3, in the five meetings.  

Know the Foe
The Big Green are 4-4 on the year and in the beginning of a lengthy trip through Florida, traveling to Kissimmee and Winter Haven in addition to Tampa for a total of seven games. Dartmouth is on a three-game winning streak entering the weekend. Senior infielder Steffen Torgersen leads the team with a .333 average, one homer, four RBI and five runs.

Righty Justin Murray will start Friday, as he leads the Ivy League with 1.13 walks allowed per nine innings. Righty Cole O’Connor will start Saturday, having pitched a complete game earlier this season. Righty hander Nathan Skinner will get the ball on Sunday.

·   The Bulls are 23^rd nationally with 1.13 home runs per game.

·   11 different Bulls have home runs this season.

·   Junior Jordan Santos (Tampa) is 21^st in the country and tops in The American with 1.14 walks per game, leading the team and conference with 16.

Six-Run Eighth Gives Bulls Series Opening Win against Dartmouth
The Bulls turned a 3-1 deficit to a 7-3 lead; Joe Genord and Jordan Santos each had two hits. 

TAMPA, FLA., MARCH 15, 2019 – Trailing by two in the eighth inning, the USF baseball team plated six runs to take its first lead and held on in the ninth to win the series opener against Dartmouth, 7-3.

 

Junior Jordan Santos (Tampa) got the Bulls (9-7) going in the top of the eighth with a single. Senior Joe Genord (Lake Worth, Fla.) singled with one away two batters later, setting USF up with runners at the corners. Senior Garrett Zech (Naples, Fla.) pinch ran for Genord, and the speed upgrade paid dividends.

 

Junior Austin Bodrato (Northvale, N.J.) doubled to left center in the next at-bat, scoring Santos and Zech from first, tying the game at 3-3. USF was able to load the bases with two away for freshman Nick Gonzalez (Tampa). A high fly ball to right was botched by the Big Green (4-6) outfielder, allowing three runs to score, putting the Bulls up 6-3. Senior catcher Tyler Dietrich (Naples, Fla.) added some insurance with an RBI single, scoring Gonzalez. 

 

Dartmouth made things interesting in the bottom half, loading the bases with one out. Junior righty Nelson Alvarez (Miami) entered with the bases juiced and was able to induce a grounder which USF turned into a game-clinching play. 

 

It was a pitcher’s duel through the first four innings. Junior righty Collin Sullivan (Randolph, Mass.) had a no-hitter working into top of the fifth. Dartmouth was able to strike in the frame to take a 1-0 lead.

 

In the bottom half, senior Chris Chatfield (Riverview, Fla.) launched a solo homer to center, tying things up. The Big Green retook the lead with a run in the sixth and top of the eighth, before USF erupted in the bottom half.  

 

Key Stats

8 – In three games this week, Genord already has eight hits.  
2 – Chatfield’s second homer of the season.  
3 – Alvarez’s third save of the year.  
17 – Santos worked his 17^th walk of the yeat. 
 

Nota-Bulls

Yeah, everyone might as well buckle up.  It's going to be a bumpy ride.  The prognosticators might have known a little more than some wanted to believe.

5 out of 7 losses are to previous tournament teams and three of them were by a combined 4 runs to a top 10 team on the road. Liberty added Virginia to their list of power five wins so although we should have taken 2 of 3 from them, its not like they're slouch either. Bottom line is our OOC schedule this season was much tougher than last season and we have been fumbling a bit to find our way. Injuries have taken a couple key bullpen arms and a productive bat from the roster but there is still enough talent to make something happen, it just might look ugly. The season starts with conference play.
