Was wanting to win the series but nothing to hang our heads about. We played a really good Liberty team that is going to go far this year. 1 outa 3 isn’t as bad as 0 n 3. We will do better than people think.

Still this says Liberty has a better team than us and I find that kind of sad...

Imagine how UF feels knowing Liberty has a better team than us and we have a better team than them.

Nine Hits Not Enough in Series Loss to Liberty
Austin Bodrato went 2-for-4 in the loss; Joe Genord hits fourth homer of the year

TAMPA, MARCH 10, 2019 – Despite nine hits, the USF baseball team dropped Sunday’s rubber match to Liberty, 5-4.

It was the Flames (11-4) jumping out to an early lead with runs in the first and second inning. Trailing, 2-0, in the bottom of the third, freshman Nick Gonzalez (Tampa) ripped a single into center. He advanced all the way to third on a throwing error and failed pickoff attempt. Jordan Santos (Tampa) drove him home in the next at-bat with a single to center. Santos advanced to third, then two batters later senior Joe Genord (Lake Worth, Fla.) tied the game with sacrifice to left.

Liberty put together a two-out rally in the next frame and took a 3-2 lead. USF immediately answered in the bottom half. Freshman Alex Bello (Miami) singled into left for his first career hit, then stole second. Two batters later, redshirt sophomore Jake Sullivan (Tampa) doubled down the left field line to score Bello and tie the score once again.

The Flames responded with another run in the fifth and in the top of the eighth. Genord launched a solo homer to left in the bottom of the eighth, but it was all USF would get from there, as Liberty’s bullpen allowed just one run on four hits over 5.1 innings.

Key Stats

8 – Eight Bulls had hits.
3 – This is just USF’s third weekend series loss in non-conference play since the start of the 2013 season. Prior to 2018’s opening series loss to No. 6 UNC, the Bulls hadn’t lost a non-conference home series since 2013.
15 – Santos has a team high 15 walks. He was 10th nationally entering the weekend in walks per game and led The American.

Nota-Bulls

  • Junior Austin Bodrato (Northvale, N.J.) matched a season high with two hits, going 2-for-4.
  • Genord moves into sole possession of fifth on USF’s all-time home run list with 35 career homers.

Up Next

The Bulls hit the road for a pair of midweek games. USF will first be at Jacksonville Tuesday at 7 p.m. then at Bethune-Cookman Wednesday at 6 p.m. The game against the Dolphins can be seen on ESPN+.

For some reason, I don't think UF cares

It's going to be hard to get anyone to care very much if we keep striking out 10+ times a game. You can make that trade off if you're hitting HRs at a good clip, but minus the power, you better be putting the ball in play.

The first four weeks have shown us LOTS of holes on this team. They're going to have to battle every game. I don't see this as a potential post-season team at all. Certainly not if they're facing injuries in an already thin pitching staff. Offensively, you can count on production from Phillips and Genord - maybe Santos and Bodrato - but beyond that?

Bullpen depth is gonna be the downfall. It was coming in with the more experience than the starting rotation and injuries have decimated it. Really need Dutka to come back.

In people's opinion, whose fault is this?  Are we just not doing a good enough job in recruiting, or in developing our players?

I don't know enough about College Baseball to know what goes into making a top caliber team, but it seems to me, being a large AAC school in the state of Florida with a nice facility - that we should be doing better than we are.

I know we have made NCAA Regionals, but never seem to be quite good enough to make it to the next level.  I understand the Florida and Florida States will always get the best players but it seems like we should do better than we do.
