TAMPA, FEB. 12, 2019 – The USF men's basketball team plays its first of two matchups in the War on I-4 rivalry Wednesday at 7 p.m. when the Bulls make the short trip to Orlando to face UCF on ESPNEWS at CFE Arena.

USF (17-6, 7-4) sits tied for fourth place in The American standings and is just a half-game behind UCF for third place. The Bulls and Knights will meet for a second time later this month on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Yuengling Center.

USF secured its fifth straight win Sunday after outlasting ECU, 72-68, in overtime to complete the season sweep of the Pirates. Sophomore guard David Collins (Youngstown, Ohio) scored a game-high 21 points and added a career-best nine rebounds, five assists and one steal. Collins, who has scored at least 20 points in three straight games, leads USF and ranks 13th in the league with 15.2 points per game. Collins is also one of the top defenders in the nation and stands 22nd in the NCAA with 2.3 steals per game.

Redshirt junior Laquincy Rideau (West Palm Beach, Fla.) added 12 points and ranks second on the team with 13.9 points per game and is only 22 points shy of 1,000 for his career. Rideau also paces The American with 3.0 steals and 5.8 assists per game, and ranks third in the NCAA in steals and 27th in assists.

Redshirt freshman Alexis Yetna (Paris) has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury, but still leads The American in rebounding (9.8 rpg) and double-doubles (10). Yetna also ranks third on USF with 13.0 points per game. Sophomore guard Justin Brown (Birmingham, Ala.) has made a team-high 42 three-pointers and ranks fifth in the conference with a .412 three-point field goal percentage.

USF is gaining attention, but needs quality wins

TAMPA — Suddenly, people can’t look away from a program previously deemed an eyesore.

USF, the surprise of the college hoops stratosphere, has transitioned from doormat to darling in Year 2 of the Brian Gregory Era. Its current five-game win streak is its longest in conference play in 27 years. And not only are the Bulls (17-6, 7-4 AAC) winning, they’re winning in bizarre, breathtaking fashion.

When they’re not beating buzzers (see SMU), they’re rallying from double-digit halftime deficits (see East Carolina) or holding on for dear life after squandering immense leads (see Memphis).

“There’s a lot of basketball left to be played, and ... I’m excited because we keep getting better,” Gregory said. “So I’m excited to see how good we could get by the end of the year.”
