USF Men's Basketball Program Experiencing A Major Turnaround Under Brian Gregory

TAMPA – Following Saturday afternoon’s tale of two halves against visiting Memphis, a game in which University of South Florida surged to a 27-1 lead before sweating out an 84-78 win, Bulls coach Brain Gregory said, “I never thought I would see the day where we’d win two games this year with 30-plus turnovers.”

The way things were with the men’s basketball program most of this decade USF fans had good reason to wonder if they would see the day their team would win many games no matter what was reflected on stat sheet.

There truly was nowhere to go but up for the program, which Gregory took over in the spring of 2017 after Orlando Antigua’s tumultuous tenure included an NCAA investigation for improper benefits involving his brother, who was a USF assistant.

The team went 24-71 in the three seasons prior to Gregory’s arrival and coming into this year the Bulls had six consecutive seasons with no more than a dozen victories. Going back over a 10-year stretch they managed to lose at least 20 games seven times, including Gregory’s 2017-18 debut when he had to work magic to put a team together.

Decent article.  Amazing to get some national attention in a good way.

**** I’m going to miss coach Gregory. His candle will burn out long before his legend ever will.

How the hell does a guy from Forbes write an article about our Tampa based Bulls with great recent history but not one local bum writes anything like it.  Fennely should be embarrassed this guy showed him his jock strap. I like him.

Be careful with your words you’ll be accused of hating all Tampa media. How dare you! Lol but I agree. It seems like a lot of other outlets get more info than the locals do sometimes.

You don’t think going to the well three times maybe too much?

It would be your first; Sir Elton's third.

And how pray tell do you know that I am not Sir Elton John?

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

    Terry Lucas, 09/26/22
