It started to dissipate when cable started and then all but went away with the Internet, and more specifically, when social media took over. What’s worse, it will never go back to the way it once was.

That's a thing of the past with the internet.  "Dealer prep" always solicits the comment from me, "Thanks, I'll drive it around front myself".

The Internet rep is still a car salesman but you're right, the Internet has taken a lot of the pain away from the car buying experience ..... but never kid yourself, if they let you buy the car, you paid too much.
