And if he was "conspicuously absent" then someone had to be taking on his role anyway. I obviously have no idea if they were planning on firing him or not, but it doesn't look like he signing period should have been a barrier if they were. Part of this was CCS showing some respect and loyalty to Gilbert. We're outsiders here not the men who have spent the last 3 years together and respect one another. This gave Gilbert the ability to market himself as a FBS OC at a school who on paper has a good offense instead of a guy who was just tossed to the curb. It's always better to look for a new job/promotion elsewhere when you're employed, same as it is for us normal people.... USF made sure to try not to cut it's nose off to spite it's face here and that was the smart move. We save a buy out and we gained over a week where we didn't have coaches out there telling kids "USF doesn't even have an OC how can you trust the offense will even fit you there anymore. We have a fantastic role planned out for you Mr Recruit". Again, zero negatives in doing what USF did. We'd be on the hook for $$ if you had your way.... You were wrong here, pal.

Fortuna favors the bold. The bold would be on the hook for buyout $$$. Only fortune there is for Gilbert. Generalities are nice, using exact circumstances are better.
