What if we just ran a spread-based offense?

Fritz, in the pregame, said they felt they knew what USF was going to try to do.  He was right.

If we know whats coming any coach in America knows what we are going to do. We are the most predictable team I've ever seen.

Isn’t that Gilbert’s philosophy though, you can know what we are going to do, but we will do it anyway. Or was that Taggart?  One of the said it.

The spread has been sporadic at USF because it takes a full compliment of quality players to work and we have rarely had that. One year we are great at QB and WR but the lines suck. One year we have a great line but a terrible WB.  And of course you still need a great coach to orchestrate it all and we’ve never had that.

actually that is incorrect. most under dog programs started running the spread because you don't need NFL linemen to run it.

I think Bobby Knight said it too.  Desperate grab at bravado, machismo.

Yep. It's barely even the same position. Spread is mostly two-point stance, little complexity in the blocking schemes. Doesn't require nearly the same size, smarts, and technique as a good traditional offense since you're not doing the same things. Just as xCWT found out, Stanford needs, and can get, top tier offensive lineman to run their offense. We can't. It's absolutely a premium position and there aren't enough of those guys to go around, hence the development of a "gimmick" offense that could succeed without traditional big uglies.

Maybe I am naive, but isn't the veer and shoot (our offense) based on spread principles?

It is, but you can’t properly call this a veer and shoot offense. Veer and shoot is supposed to be passing that sets up running. I’ve seen us trying to do the opposite.

That’s the genius of the Gilbert “veer and shoot”!!!

It’s the exact opposite of the traditional version thus very confusing for opposing defenses.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
