Breaking down the ACC preseason ballot: Coastal Division

During the decade of the Paul Johnson system in Atlanta, we have seen years where the skill players return but operate behind an inexperienced offensive line; and we have seen seasons where a veteran line opens the holes, but for a quarterback and running backs who are still learning the reads in Johnson’s unique option attack.

In 2018, GT can count veterans all the way around: Quarterback, A Back, B Back and in the offensive line. The one big loss from last year is wide receiver Ricky Jeune. Jeune was a game breaker, to be sure. But think about it, doesn’t Johnson always seem to find that one guy, DeMaryius Thomas, Stephen Hill, DeAndre Smelter or Jeune, who gets open behind the secondary several times a game when Johnson’s quarterback (TaQuon Marshall in 2018) pulls the ball back after a long series of run options and throws downfield? This will be a tough offense to stop. Defensively, GT has changed coordinators and systems. Look for the Yellow Jackets to attack now, rather than read and react, in an effort to generate more turnovers.GT must replace its entire secondary, and that suggests the Jackets may give up some big plays in their new defense. Still, this is a team that will keep the ball for long stretches of the game and will be difficult to outscore.
