Wasn't freshmen orientation required while this pep rally is optional?

I'm willing to bet 1/10 actually show up. Seems like a giant waste of an opportunity.

I know it seems odd, but most college students actually care more about the academics of the school they're going to and double for their parents. I think you'd get a little push back if you forced parents and kids to go an athletic pep-rally. Far more kids are going to end up affiliated with the Greek system at USF than giving athletics more than a passing glance, and there'd be a riot if we made people go a fraternity/sorority function at orientation.

They wouldn't know the difference unless they had more than single kid going to college in a short time span. For a school with attendance issues, lack of community support, etc.. They should be using every opportunity to get everyone on board.

I know it seems odd, but most parents would like to have a well rounded child.

And watching football is the key to that?

So they have a day for the actual academics only when the parents are there and USF is focusing on the "U" in USF that people are spending tens of thousands of dollars on that will impact these kids far beyond anything athletics ever does for them? Then later, when the kids are on campus, they do something where they focus on the small side piece of college that is sports?

I'm going to need a moment to process this.

We can pretty much guess where that will be happening ....

I don't think I need to explain the importance of athletics\football in regards to the college experience.

I think incorporating something at orientation, even if it's just a couple of minutes would be expected. It doesn't have to be something major but not having it at all seems like a wasted opportunity to market to your incoming students. Every little bit we can do to engage the students adds up. Maybe a few more kids come to that pep rally, maybe not but at least we are maximizing our opportunities.

Just got home from two long days of freshman orientation with my daughter. I think every office/department on campus made a presentation - with one BIG exception. You guessed it: nothing by athletics. Zip. No effort made to fire up a captive audience of incoming freshmen. Argh!

I don't know about firing up anybody but Athletics does at least have a presence there, explaining the process to students about getting tickets for football games, because my daughter has worked a couple of them.

I wonder if Alabama does.
