Interesting and way before Judy and Doug.

The conference's downfall was sealed more than 20 years ago as it rejected Penn State when the NIttany Lions asked to join the conference. Even post-Sandusky it's hard to imagine any conference turning down Penn State today. But the Big East figured that its basketball operations were going so smoothly that there was no reason to add football. Basketball is the Big East's Maginot Line; it was so busy fighting the old war they had no idea what the new one would be.

The new war was the war for college football television dollars. And the tunnel-visioned Big East had no reason to think that those dollars would be so lucrative, rebuffing Penn State as a threat to its non-football old guard. It was typical Yankee arrogance; a failure to see that as the country moved South and West, from crammed cities to suburbs that could afford neatly-manicured gridirons, that football was about to be king.

After reading his article I noticed he still had a away to take a shot at USF best he could.  Well how about helping write positive article about USF to help stir up some fan base?  I do agree though Harlan was never sold on the Tampa Bay area. Still don't have an IPF.  I don't know if Brooks can separate himself from fsu but he would have it built within a year.

I've been saying this all along.  The BIg East basketball schools killed the Big East as we knew it.

But Louisville and "Cuse sure didn't have a problem jumping ship to the ACC when the chance came

That’s not his job.  Building a fan base is the responsibility of the AD.

Dunno if they were or weren't  but I do know they weren't "outspoken" about whatever their stance was.   The guy who lead the turn it down charge was Nordenberg and he was influential enough to get enough of BE members to turn the deal down.

Keep in mind that if the BE had not started to fall apart we would have never been a member.

True, but the BE didn't learn from the round of defections that allowed us to join.

So in order to save the Big East by any means necessary the departing teams decided to reject a contract 7x what the Big East would be forced to settle for,  demanded UCF be added as a member USF be damned as it was our only chance at salvation, UCF got voted in, they all jumped shipped, UCF joined, the Big East got a 1.8 million per school contract. Seems like a pretty reasonable timeline and plan for rescuing the conference by the departing teams, either that or they had completely checked out, didn’t care at all who got added and had already moved on in life with plans for life after the Big East.
