USF has taken a modest gamble it hopes will result in a major payoff, landing former Oklahoma State PG Zack Dawson.

A consensus four-star recruit in the Class of 2017, Dawson  (6-foot-3, 185 pounds) must sit out the 2018-19 season, and will have three seasons of eligibility thereafter.

He was dismissed from OSU in December for repeated violations of team rules, but a team source told ESPN the dismissal was unrelated to the FBI investigation of former assistant coach Lamont Evans, fired after being charged with fraud and corruption.

If Dawson pans out at USF, he'll represent a coup of sorts for second-year coach Brian Gregory. He had offers from Louisville, Arizona State and Kansas State — among others — out of South Miami High.

He could be very helpful on the scout team, practice court and locker room...
