What impacts does this have?  What are the feelings here?  Looking forward to it?  What do our gamblers and non-gamblers think?

Maybe this is tending towards Mad Cow territory, but my first response would be, as always:

WTF does the federal government have to do with gambling in any way, shape, or form? We have a limited and enumerated system of national government, and nowhere is the word gambling mentioned in the Constitution. Constitutionally, Social Engineering can only be done at the state level, not at the federal level.

That said, I predict this will result in significant match fixing. The temptation to say one thing (via Twitter, before the game) and do another (on the field) after placing a bet in between will prove to be irresistible to those of little morals.

In fact, in the next article in the list, here's a quote expressing just that (although admittedly, there may have been no intent to mislead, nor any bets made)

Quote

There was a sudden influx of unusual betting in sportsbooks from the Caribbean to Asia. One of the largest underdogs in the NBA that night (at 12 points) was getting unexpected action to win. Within moments the monitors at Sportradar AG -- a large European-based gambling services company that has a contract with the NBA to watch more than 550 international sportsbooks -- had flagged it as possible match fixing.

The target was the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The analyst went to work and within a minute or two found what he believed to be the source, a tweet from ESPN reporter Royce Young revealing that LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love were all going to play that night in Oklahoma City after Cavs coach Tyronn Lue had previously announced they'd all skip the game to rest. Sportradar issued an all clear, and casinos around the globe scrambled to reset the lines. Within 10 minutes, the game was a pick 'em.

And now I'mma gonna go full-mad-cow mode and say this is exactly what's happening in DC these days. Trump is calling his broker and a few select buddies just before he tweets in order to sell short on angry tweets and buy early on happy tweets. He can move markets with a tweet, there's no way he would not try to personally profit from doing so. Just look at the latest ZTE news. Makes no sense until you look at it from the pay-to-play angle.

Widespread legal sports betting will increase the risk of kickbacks and payoffs, IMO. When insiders are trading on the sly, outsiders will get burned. This asymmetry of information is one of the main reasons I don't gamble.

The Sheriff should be commenting on this momentarily.

The vitriol is real.  I think Trump is getting guided on this by his team and the Chinese negotiators.  I sort of doubt he's trying market manipulation to make some spare bucks while he's being absolutely skewered for ever having been born.

:backtotopic:

Love the whipped up fervor, but let's stay within the context of the Topic.  Thanks.

WASHINGTON — New Jersey won a landmark ruling from the Supreme Court Monday that could lead many states to legalize betting on college and professional sports.

The justices ruled 7-2 that a 25-year-old federal law that has effectively prohibited sports betting outside Nevada by forcing states to keep prohibitions on the books is unconstitutional. The ruling could set the stage for other states to expand legalized gambling as a source of government revenue.

Justice Samuel Alito, a New Jersey native, wrote the court's opinion in the case. Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor dissented.

It was a victory for the state's recently departed governor, Chris Christie, who had challenged the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, passed by Congress in 1992 to preserve the integrity of the nation's most popular sports. He and other proponents sought the ruling in order to help the state's ailing casinos and racetracks.
