Rich Rodriguez says that "a couple" of players might not qualify academically to play this season, but says he'll hold off on naming names until next week when final test scores come in.

The coaching staff still hasn't come up with a working depth chart entering August practices.

They'll do that soon, Rodriguez said, but the names will be written in pencil, not ink. Any starters picked at that time -- before practices -- are projected, not final.

Jason Colson is still, first and foremost, a tailback.

Rodriguez said he will probably line Colson up at the slot during the season as he did in the spring at times, but his primary job will be to carry -- not catch -- the ball.

Still, with a crowded backfield and a shortage of proven receivers, it just makes sense to get Colson on the field any way Rodriguez can.

You might chalk up a very early edge to the Mountaineers heading into the Sept. 4 opener against Syracuse.

That's because while Rodriguez has never faced new Orange Coach Greg Robinson before, the Mountaineers' game plan will depend on making adjustments on the fly, the WVU coach said.

Normally, a young team like the Mountaineers would have trouble doing that. But one of the places where in-game adjustments are so important is undoubtedly the defense. And it's there that WVU has its veteran leadership.

Guys like senior safeties Jahmile Addae and Mike Lorello, both of whom can make in-game changes with relative ease, will help that cause.

wvu had it all but handed to them last year and could not close the deal.

if they do not want to be left behind in the bcs roulette they have got to step up this year and be ready to step it up another notch in 2006
