As the coach of a preseason conference title favorite, Charlie Strong continually has warned his players they will get their opponents' best shot.

Verbal shots included. Saturday at Tulane, the Bulls returned fire, and Strong suggested it nearly cost them.

"I said to our guys the other night, 'We were up, and on defense we kind of lost our edge when we started talking, chirping,'" said Strong, whose team surrendered 21 unanswered second-half points in a 34-28 victory.

"And I said, 'Just keep playing. You don't need to chirp, just keep playing.' And then it turned into a chirping game. So now you lose your edge, you lose your focus."

Tulane collected 208 of its 415 yards in the game's final 18 minutes, scoring touchdowns on three of its last four possessions. Before that, USF appeared on pace for its fourth consecutive victory by a margin of 30 or more points.

Then the Green Wave began chipping -- and chirping -- away.

"But the great thing about it is, they owned up to it," Strong said of his players. "It's like, 'Coach, you know what, you're exactly right. If we had just kept playing...'"

The other thread about Houston got me thinking that this USF teaM has been fairly consistent. It's been what you see is mostly what you get from day one, and we keep on defeating our weak opponents.

And what if everyone we play this year is just a weaker opponent?  Then we win them all!

Very true...there have not been any drop dead surprises with this team. It is a veteran group who is consiently steady.

Coach needs to let the Bulls go so we can score more points. Athletes talk, it’s part of the game. He needs to get over it and the guys play ball. Everyone can’t be stuffy like him.

I trust CCS, to know what helps and what doesn't on this particular point. He's been the DC at UF for many years and has heard and seen it all:

"And I said, 'Just keep playing. You don't need to chirp, just keep playing.' And then it turned into a chirping game. So now you lose your edge, you lose your focus."

Doesn't that make any sense to you?

IMO, Chirping takes your mind off what you are there to do.

For example, in a previous game this year, the opposing players were trying to get into the head of Flowers by chirping to him. He fell for it by responding in kind and then got called for a15 yard taunting penalty. He now understands what they were trying to do and didn't fall for it again.as

Now the defense has learned the same thing the hard way:

"But the great thing about it is, they owned up to it," Strong said of his players. "It's like, 'Coach, you know what, you're exactly right. If we had just kept playing...'"

He has an excuse for just about everything that happens. Funny thing is, the excuse always deflects the blame away from him.

We'll see if this continues.

I see nothing wrong with him holding his team accountable for their actions.

That doesn't sound like something any 20 year old would say.  I don't believe that is a direct quote from any player on our team.

He hasn't missed a block yet on FG attempts. #truth

He hasn't dropped a pass.
