The G5 Should just have their own 8 team playoff.

That's just what the P5 wants so we'll go away and they won't have to be bothered including us in their money grab. We'd really be irrelevant then.

A fun, what if.  This would be the lineup if we had an 8-team playoff with the P5 champs, highest ranked G5 champ and two at-large teams (assuming highest rank in the champion right now):

8.  USF (G5 Champ) at 1.  Alabama (SEC Champ)

7.  Wisconsin (Big Ten at-large) at 2.  Clemson (ACC Champ)

6.  TCU (B12 Champ) at 3.  Penn State (Big Ten Champ)

5.  Washington (PAC12 Champ) at 4. Georgia (SEC at-large)

What if you made the G5 Champ play the P5 at large and give the 1&2 schools the bye?

The winner could still play in a NY6 bowl.

Could expand to 6 with 2 teams getting byes. Then have the conference champ from each P5 conference and the top G5 conference champ to round out the 6 teams. Too many people would complain though about a G5 getting in over the 2nd place P5 team in a good conference. Same would happen in an 8 team playoff. You would really have to go to 16 or 24 before some of that would go away similar to NCAA basketball. But you would still have teams on the bubble who are better than some conferences champs but at that point you aren’t talking about top 5 teams.

Sorry, but are going to have to let you go. See  personnel on your way out.

They really would have no grounds to complain in this scenario. You would essentially have 70 teams vying for one sport while each P5 team would have between a 1 and 10 and 1 and 14 chance of making the Playoff.

I still feel the perfect number is 8. The 5 P5 conference champs, 1 G5, 2 at-large bids, seeded by ranking, regardless of whether a conference champ or at-large. Last season would have looked like this:

Western Michigan (13-0) @ Alabama (13-0)

Oklahoma (10-2) @ Ohio State (11-1)

Michigan (10-2) @ Clemson (12-1)

Penn State (11-2) @ Washington (12-1)

The only 2 loss P5 team that would have been left out would have been West Virginia, which no one would have argued that they were one of the 8 best or even 10 best teams last season.

8 team playoff makes sense.

This will happen. It will take a few years, but it will happen.

It would have to be 16 or 8 teams in a playoff.  There's no way some teams get an extended season with an extra game if they don't get the bye.  The argument against a playoff has always been the extra game(s) and some teams getting a bye just extends that one more game for those that don't.

I'd love to see an 8 game playoff with 2 G5 champions, 5 P5 champions and one other highest ranked team from any conference or independents.  Seeding is set by the final rankings after conference championship weekend.  So in a normal year when the at-large team is P5, the P5 conferences split 3/4 of the CFP pot and the G5 conferences split 1/4 of the pot.

2 G5 champs would be overkill most years. Would Temple be in the CFP playoff last year? Many years the conference champ from the second best G5 conference has 3 or 4 losses.
