A fun, what if.  This would be the lineup if we had an 8-team playoff with the P5 champs, highest ranked G5 champ and two at-large teams (assuming highest rank in the champion right now):

8.  USF (G5 Champ) at 1.  Alabama (SEC Champ)

7.  Wisconsin (Big Ten at-large) at 2.  Clemson (ACC Champ)

6.  TCU (B12 Champ) at 3.  Penn State (Big Ten Champ)

5.  Washington (PAC12 Champ) at 4. Georgia (SEC at-large)

The P5 would never open themselves up to a loss in the first round of the CFP to a G5 team. Just like they would never let Boise State get to the title game during their great runs and one year matched them with a fellow G5 (at the time) TCU to further minimize their success. Before Western Michigan lost last year by a TD, the G5 rep in a major bowl had won the prior 3. No way they risk a G5 upsetting Alabama and getting close to a national title. As it is a G5 could go undefeated back to back years and still be kept out of the top 4. That’s how they want it.

It is just a, "what if".  Even without this format, a G5 getting into an 8-team playoff is far more likely than a 4-team one.

I've been on a 10 team playoff plan for the last few years

  • P5 Conference winners each get a spot
  • Highest Ranked G-5 (conference champ) Gets a spot
  • 4 at large teams play in "Play in games" to get into the final 8.

This would be  the perfect plan to make all conferences relevant and have a chance to be in contention for the national title.  I think this would give the P5 enough of a leg up on the G5 too that they could go along with it.

10-team would be a tougher sell as it adds yet another week of games over an 8-team one.

Yep

A larger format playoff system has failed in every other level of college football

The G5 Should just have their own 8 team playoff.

Remember when NCAA 1AA football expanded to 16 and then 24 teams(I believe).

Also, NCAA Division 1A Baseball is DOUBLING the participants of their PlayOff Teams.
