GAME DAY AT SAN JOSE STATE

USF will open its 21st season of football and 18th in FBS play on Saturday, when the Bulls travel to California for just the second time in program history. USF is 15-5 all-time in season openers and 1-4 in road season openers, playing their first since winning at No. 16/18 Notre Dame (23-20) in 2011. This will be the first meeting with San Jose State.

CALIFORNIA DREAMING: USF will open a season playing in California for the second time in program history. The Bulls fell, 41-12, at San Diego State to open the 1999 season, USF’s only other trip to play in the state. That game, which pitted then I-AA USF vs. the I-A Aztecs, marked USF’s first-ever game vs. an I-A opponent. The Bulls have played just one other game in program history in the Pacific Time Zone, a 32-31 win at Nevada in 2012.

SJSU CONNECTIONS: USF Director of Athletics Mark Harlan and SJSU first-year head coach Brent Brennan are very close friends, dating to their both serving on the staff of head coach **** Tomey at Arizona.  SJSU Offensive Coordinator Andrew Sowder was a quality control assistant on Charlie Strong’s staff at Texas last year and worked with USF Offensive Coordinator Sterlin Gilbert at Eastern Illinois (2012-13) and Bowling Green (2014).

A BOUQUET OF FLOWERS: Senior quarterback Quinton Flowers enters the 2017 season on five national award watch lists, two more than the most by any Bull before him. Flowers appears on watch lists for the Maxwell and Walter Camp player of the year awards and the Manning, O’Brien and Unitas national quarterback awards.
