Proven O-Line Paving the Way in Fall Camp

By TOM ZEBOLD
USF Senior Writer

TAMPA, AUG. 4, 2017 – USF's 2016 season saw the offensive linemen pave the way for the Bulls to sprint past school records, including total yards (6,650), rushing yards (3,714) and touchdowns (77).

Quarterback Quinton Flowers, a member of four national watch lists, is primed for another amazing season and his big guys up front are hungry for much more production.

"The offensive line knows what they are doing and Q is just being a phenomenal leader on the field," senior center Cameron Ruff (Tampa) said. "With his leadership and the way the offense is going, I think the sky is the limit for us."

17498Eight practices into fall camp, USF's up-tempo offense seems to be moving even quicker with Flowers in lockstep with the Bulls' most returning starters on the offensive line in the past three seasons.

Ruff, a Rimington Trophy candidate, and senior left guard Jeremi Hall (Atlanta) both started all 13 games last season, while sophomore right tackle Marcus Norman (Sebastian, Fla.) got the starting nod nine times. Sophomore William Atterbury (Clearwater) also started four games before suffering a season-ending injury.

Once the Aug. 26 season opener at San Jose State arrives, USF fans will notice the tremendous size of the Bulls' offensive line as well. USF's current first-team line stands and average of 6-feet-5 and weighs an average of 317 pounds. Despite their seize, these mountains of men are keeping up quite well with new offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert's ever-accelerating attack.

"It's not think fast, Coach Gilbert says you gotta know fast," new offensive line coach Matt Mattox said. "They've done a really good job of understanding that it's not so much how much you can see it in the film room. We've gotta be able to communicate as fast as we can on the field."

Our O line this year seems to be the most impressive O line we have ever had.  Not so sure about this balls to the wall pace gilbertson wants but as long as it doesnt create false start penalties I will feel better.
