BREAKING: South Florida will hire Brian Gregory as its next head basketball coach, per sources. Former HC at both Dayton and Georgia Tech.

Boom. Any time you can get a 50 year old head coach with a 76-86 record who never finished higher than 11th in the conference at his previous job and who's been unemployed for a year, you've gotta pull the trigger.

Looks like GaTech is going to pay him $500k next year, too. This might be our new hiring strategy for all new coaches.

My one GaTech friend just emailed me and said, "They just didn't give him enough time. Another few years and he'd have easily had us competing for 9th in the conference on a regular basis." Then there were two lines of laughing.

That's a good one.  

I used to hear him on the radio - at least he sounds like a nice guy and his NY accent isn't too annoying.

That 76-86 record was at GT.  He had to rebuild the program and went from 11 to 21 wins during his tenure.  

He went 172-94 at Dayton before that.  

They got a guy with experience as a head coach this time.  GT took a step back after they didn't renew him.

Really though, hard to imagine things getting any worse.  We have no players, NCAA something hanging over our head, zero expectations, perfect job for a guy like Gregory.

Say what?  His replacement, Josh Pastner is ACC Coach of the Year this year, his first year at Tech.  GT had a couple of huge Top 25 wins over FSU and UNC.  They didn't make the NCAA tourney but they were close.  They're in the NIT as a #6 seed.

I'd say they took a major step forward.
