I could stomach Taggart leaving and still feel positive about the situation. If he poaches our highest rated recruit then he can go eff himself.

I would have to think that if Charlie Strong got hired then he would be doing the same thing, reaching out to kids that he was recruiting to UT and trying to flip them to USF.

I doubt it would do any good in his case. I saw a tweet of his a few days ago where he said that he was going to whatever school Taggart is HC.

Yep, I think it's like a done deal, but, who knows what goes on behind the scenes. Maybe Mr. Nike's grandson is being recruited by Oregon as a QB and Tags gets some pressure not to bring in competition for him. Or, they have a stud recruit already lined up that will bolt if Judson commits because he'll feel like the new coach has "his" guy and he won't get a shot.

I think we have to try and hang on to him if we can.

Strong is a complete 180 in coaching philosophies. He will be a disaster. We are built as a wide open offensive oriented team. He is a conservative defensive minded coach.

He changed Texas to a spread to suit the kids on the roster... sounds familiar.

Defense is where this team needs desperate help right now.

they can over time maybe but he won't come in here with the same mind set that an offensive coach would. that was a big part of his downfall at texas.

You clearly don't like him, but his issues at Texas had a lot to do with the players that were there when he got there and the non-support of the biggest boosters from the get-go.

first... I highly doubt that he would leave Clemson right before the playoffs... maybe, but unlikely, so, it would put us in a recruiting quandry to say the least.

Second... Strong had a pretty good defense on that Florida team (# 9 in 2008, #4 in 2009) with Tebow and Harvin doing work on the offensive side. He had a pretty good offense at Louisville with Bridgewater.

He also put top-25 defenses on the field during his time in Louisville, number 1 in 2013, his final season. They had the number 28 offense that year as well. Just because he is a defensive coach doesn't mean that he will neglect the offense.

Not for nothing, but... Alabama has the number 1 defense (26 offense), Ohio State is number 4 (#21 offense), Clemson is 9 (13 offense), Washington is 10 (22 offense)... barely missed Michigan is 2, Wisconsin is 7, Penn State is 22... USF is 120. Offense is exciting, but, defense wins championships. Texas had the number 19 offense last year by the way. The key to a good coach is balance. I love our offense, but, our team has no balance at all. We should have absolutely blown out some teams this year, but, couldn't do it because our defense was trash.

Just a guess on my part, but I suspect Strong will be perfectly happy to leave well enough alone on offense. Not much to fix when you're averaging 40+ a game.

Strong is a defensive minded coach, but the good news for him is that all he has to do is get our defense to average - not great, just average - and we'll remain a top 25 team next year.

I like our odds, considering Strong has probably forgotten more about coaching defense that Woodie has ever learned.

Defense is where this team needs desperate help right now.

Here is a USA Today article on him and his offensive failures at texas. He changed his offense 3 times.

But the question that lingers over Texas like a thick morning fog is whether Strong, a defensive coach through and through, can win big playing a style of football he has never truly believed is the best path to a championship.

But when Strong talks about why he is now falling in line with the rest of the Big 12 in embracing the full up-tempo spread system, you don’t hear him talk about a style of football that has proven to win national championships — because, historically, it hasn’t. What you hear is a calculation based on recruiting.

“When you look at the state of Texas, and we just came back from San Antonio at the Texas High School Coaches Association and the high school coaches are doing an unbelievable job, it's the offenses that are set up in this state,” Strong said. “All of 'em are wide open. Now when you bring in a coach who has been involved with that offense, it's amazing how it takes off.”

Not exactly the most profound epiphany you’ve ever heard.

he problem is, this is the third consecutive year Strong has changed what he wants Texas to look like. And last year, after big talk in the summer about trying to open up the offense, the Longhorns fell back into familiar patterns and looked like a program with no identity or commitment to what kind of team they were going to be.

“We had different pages from different books,” tight end Caleb Bluiett said. “We’ve tried to initiate this offense before, just some people just weren’t committed enough to do it. I can’t really tell you why. The coaches planned on doing it, but we ended up not.”
