Bulls Host Jacksonville Monday

TAMPA, NOV. 20, 2016 – After a strong showing in its season opener, the University of South Florida women’s basketball team returns to Sun Dome Arena Monday night for an in-state clash with Jacksonville University. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

USF defeated North Florida 78-42 for its first 30-point victory of the season last Tuesday. Three different players finished in double-figures, led by Kitija Laksa (Riga, Latvia) with a game high 18 points. Maria Jespersen (Arhus, Denmark) opened her junior campaign with 16 points and eight rebounds, just shy of a double-double.

Two Bulls turned in career nights as Katelyn Weber (Little Rock, Ark.) led USF on the boards with 11 rebounds, tying her career high. Laia Flores (Mataro, Spain) also matched her career high eight assists, but the mark came without a single turnover.

Three freshman made their green and gold debuts and made an immediate impact for the Bulls. Tamarra Henshaw (Palm Coast, Fla.) made it a night to remember scoring 11 points and grabbing eight rebounds in just 15 minutes of action. Dorottya Nagy (Pecs, Hungary) added five points and three rebounds while Jazz Bond (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) chipped in three points, three rebounds and one block.

Promotions

Tuesday night is Feed-A-Bull Food Pantry night. Bring three non-perishable food items to Gate A and receive a free hat, while supplies last. Feed-A-Bull is a campus food pantry initiative and is available for enrolled USF students on the USF Tampa campus. It was created to address food insecurity by providing supplemental food to students in need. For more information on Feed-A-Bull, click here.

The Opponent

USF and the Dolphins will meet for the 12th time in program history and the Bulls hold a perfect 11-0 record. The pair last met in 2015, when the Bulls ran away with a 74-52 victory on Nov. 13 in the preseason WNIT.

The Dolphins (2-1) captured their first-ever ASUN Conference championship last season and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Jacksonville was picked as the favorite to win the league again in the ASUN’s preseason poll and returns four starters from last season.

In their last outing, the Dolphins lost to No. 12 Florida State 90-47 on the road, and were led by Sherranda Reddick with 17 points, who currently leads the ASUN at 19.7 points per game.

Notables

  • The Bulls are a perfect 8-0 in Tampa against the Dolphins.

  • USF is the only team in NCAA Division I with nine international players on its roster.

  • The Bulls enter the season receiving votes in both the AP (No. 26) and USA Today/Coaches (No. 31) Polls.

  • USF is 29-4 since the 2014-15 season at the Sun Dome. The Bulls have enjoyed success at home thanks to the growing attendance. USF has set its top-five attendance records in the past three seasons, including the new mark of 6,634 set last February.
