UConn football Huskies bathe in warm memories

Tampa has brought out the best in UConn

Posted: Friday, October 14, 2016 8:39 pm

Seeking a win that could turn its season around in a flash, the UConn football team tonight returns to the site of one of its greatest football victories ever.

On Dec. 4, 2000 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, Dave Teggart kicked a 52-yard field goal in the final seconds to give the Huskies a 19-16 win over South Florida, a share of the Big East championship, and a berth in the Fiesta Bowl.

The current Huskies (3-3, 1-2 American) can’t clinch a league title or anything else of tangible significance in tonight’s matchup, but they can continue a turnaround that seemed to start with last week’s victory over Cincinnati.

UConn had lost three of its previous four entering the Cincinnati game, but its 20-9 win has it within a game of .500 in league play and even thinking about an AAC East Division title.

The biggest impediment to that, of course, is an extremely talented bunch from USF (5-1, 2-0) that has pummeled each of its opponents this season save one — Florida State.

Bringing up a 16 year old game in which they barely beat a 3-year-old team seems a bit odd

Wrong year. We didn't lose to UConn in 2000 at home (we actually beat them in Stoors when the game was played in miserable windy conditions). We were undefeated in 2000 at home (we won all six games that season at Raymond James).

Thank you.  It seemed like Dave Teggart was there for 5-6 years but a decade was a little crazy.
