Mayes is now an OT...

Nothing changes... the guy is still an athletic freak.  He may not see the field this season because of the move, but he's a really really raw athletic guy.  I think he could be even better at OT.  Not a lot of OTs who can run a sub 5.0 40.

Swarming Defense Dominates Scrimmage

August 13, 2016

USF Senior Writer

TAMPA, AUG. 13, 2016 – USF made plays on both sides of the ball in Saturday’s sun-filled scrimmage, but it was the defense that stood out on the hot morning.

Freshman safety Craig Watts set the tone with an early interception and defensive coordinator Raymond Woodie’s swarming group stalled several drives with stops. All of that was accomplished with head coach Willie Taggart orchestrating situations by constantly switching downs and distances USF will face throughout real games.

“We put our guys in a lot of different situations and counted points. I thought our defense played really well,” Taggart said.

Pressure was constant from a defensive line that’s progressing at a rapid pace this fall. Sacks by tackle Deadrin Senat (Immokalee, Fla.) and end Kirk Livingstone (Fort Lauderdale) ended two separate drives. Sophomore defensive end Nicholas Munera (Tampa) got the defense off the field with a fumble recovery later in the action.

Middle linebacker Auggie Sanchez directed the first-team unit to dominance and graded the defense’s overall effort at a “B” for the day. The junior from St. Petersburg said the group as whole has rebounded well after USF’s Gulf Coast offense started camp in stride.

“We were very ready to go today,” Sanchez said. “We’ve definitely turned this defensive bus around and it’s good to see. A lot of guys are having energy and a lot of guys are making plays.”

Watts Shines in Secondary

St. Petersburg product Craig Watts is showing his new coaches he wants to play right away.

The freshman safety out of Admiral Farragut Academy wrestled a tipped pass away from a receiver close to the line for an interception early in Saturday’s scrimmage. The former four-star recruit showcased his aggressive style moments later while breaking up a short pass attempt.

“That kid, I think he’s going to be one heckuva football player. He wants to be good,” Taggart said. “He’s one of those kids that loves to hit. When we say we’re going to scrimmage, he gets fired up about coming out here and playing football.”

Livingstone Looks Good in Gray

Kirk Livingstone made the kind of plays it takes to earn one of the defense’s coveted gray jerseys in Saturday's scrimmage.

The redshirt freshman end busted through the line for a sack to halt one of the first-team offense’s drives against a defense filled with first- and second-team players.

“He’s really stood out this entire camp so far,” Taggart said.

Wearing gray is the highest honor a defensive player can achieve at USF. Players have to rise up to starter status and shine in the classroom and community in order to pull on a gray jersey.

“He’s a big-time player and does a lot of things the right way,” said Sanchez of Livingstone. “He’s big in plays and he’s big with getting in his playbook. He’s 100 percent wanting to do things the right way and he’s eager to get better.”

Livingstone, tackle Deadrin Senat and safety Devin Abraham are the latest Bulls to make their gray debuts. The rest of the group includes secondary standouts Deatrick Nichols, Ronnie Hoggins, Jaymon Thomas and Khalid McGee. Sanchez and fellow linebacker Nigel Harris also are suiting up in gray, along with tackle Kevin Bronson.

“It’s important because we want guys that are going to take pride in it,” Taggart said. “All of them want to play come Sept. 3, so they know they have to compete and do their part in order to earn that gray jersey.”

Gulf Coast Offense Makes Its Plays

USF’s defense won the day, but couldn’t stop the up-tempo offense from motoring into the end zone here and there on Saturday.

Senior running back Darius Tice (Miami) started the scrimmage with a short touchdown run and jetted around the defense for a 15-yard run into the end zone later on.

USF scored on three consecutive red-zone drives and the sequence started with quarterback Quinton Flowers (Miami) finding tight end Elkanah Dillon (Ocala) for a 10-yard touchdown.

Sophomore receiver Stanley Clerveaux (Miami) hauled in a 10-yard TD pass from Brett Kean (Lakewood, Ohio) and the Gulf Coast Offense did more damage in red-zone situations. Flowers found Marquez Valdes-Scantling (St. Petersburg) for a 5-yard touchdown before the grand finale.

Freshman quarterback Chris Oladokun (Tampa) ended the scrimmage in explosive fashion by throwing a 60-yard touchdown pass to redshirt freshman receiver Donovan Geter (Tampa).

“We were in a four-minute situation and usually you don’t go deep, but you never fall asleep out there,” Taggart said. “It was great that Chris put it right on the money and Geter finished it off for us. That was a great way for the offense to finish with the way the defense dominated today.”

Bulls Bits

- Taggart invited another crew of referees out to work with the Bulls during Saturday’s scrimmage that was beneficial on many levels. “It was a good scrimmage that we can go back, watch film and learn from – coaches and players,” Taggart said. “From substitutions, to the sidelines, to clock management, that was really good for us today.”

- NFL scouts from the Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos and New York Jets attended the scrimmage.

- USF will get a taste of what’s to come at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday during picture day. The event is not open to the public.
