Recognizing Speraw

One of the annual events at the Final Four is a champions luncheon hosted by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. For the second year in a row, UCF's coaching staff was invited because of the Knights' Atlantic Sun title. On Friday it received some surprise recognition.

Keynote speaker Dave Gavitt, former Big East commissioner, singled out coach Kirk Speraw for his accomplishments in 12 seasons in Orlando. Gavitt was in Worcester, Mass., three weeks ago and watched UCF's 77-71 first-round loss to Connecticut, and he took time to learn a bit about Speraw's ties to Arizona coach Lute Olson and UNLV coach Lon Kruger.

"Not everybody got that plug. That was a nice surprise," UCF assistant Craig Brown said.

Saturday morning, the usually anonymous Speraw was stopped by a number of peers who congratulated him.

Speraw is one hell of a coach.  He stopped UCF's reputation of being a coaching graveyard.  I'm glad he's over here.

I didn't know we had that reputation?  I think Jay Bergman, Greg Frady, Gene Chizik, Tim Salem, Lance Thompson, Joe Robinson, Gene McDowell and Torchy Clark would disagree with your assessment.

Chuck Machock, Phil Carter and Joe Dean, Jr. all quit coaching basketball after resigning from UCF.

I hope Kirk quits basketball after his career at UCF...

I just hope that it's 25 plus years from now with some Final Four appearances and a renamed court!

04, I was referring to basketball.  In the 80/90s, UCF basketball was known as a place where coaches went before their careers ended and not in a good way.
