Top-ranked Texas heads to NCAA Championship as team to beat

There were no surprises in men’s regional play recently, leading to the strongest field ever assembled for the NCAA Division I Men’s Championship this week.

The top 20 teams in Golfweek/Sagarin rankings are among the 30 teams that advanced to the national championship, May 27-June 1 at Eugene (Ore.) Country Club.

The top five teams – Texas, Illinois, Stanford, Georgia and Oklahoma State – all head to the finals in good form. Each won their respective regional. However, only once since the six-regional format started in 2009 has a team won a regional and the national championship – Alabama in 2013.

Top-ranked Texas, winners of seven of their last nine events, may be the team to beat in Oregon. Stanford is another team that enters the finals playing well. The Cardinal have won only three times this year – their last three starts. The field also includes defending national champion, LSU, coming in ranked No. 8.

The field will play with 72 holes of stroke play with the top-eight teams advancing to match play. Since the start of match play, no team that won the stroke-play portion and the No. 1 seed, has won the national title.

Individually, Arizona State’s Jon Rahm comes to Oregon off two consecutive victories. The senior from Barrika, Spain, followed up his Pac-12 Conference victory with a triumph at the Albuquerque Regional. Rahm, who has won three of his last four events, has 11 career titles at Arizona State. Rahm and Texas’ Beau Hossler are in a tight race for college golf’s player of the year.

Rahm, who already has recorded two top-10 finishes as an amateur on the PGA Tour, might be the biggest prospect in the college game. All eyes will be focused on the Spaniard in Eugene.

Would love it if we were that waking giant in this tourney. Just hope they can put in a good showing, esp Aksel. Need him to go out with a flurry.

I think the key to how far we can go will depend on how well Chris DiMarco does. He is the weakest link in our starting lineup. We can't afford to have to rely on the scores of only four players. We will need all five guys to play strong. That is especially true, if we can make it into match play.

By TOM ZEBOLD

USF Senior Writer

EUGENE, Ore., MAY 25, 2016 – Head coach Steve Bradley’s Bulls have made a return trip to the NCAA Championship finals and they’ve brought along an optimistic approach.

No. 15 seed USF and 29 other programs begin their championship run Friday at Eugene Country Club in Oregon. Teams will play 18 holes each of the first three days of the tournament and the top 15 continue stroke play with 18 more holes on Monday, June 30. Match play quarterfinals for the final eight teams take place Tuesday, May 31 along with the semifinals. The two remaining teams compete in the finals on Wednesday, June 1.

Last season, USF advanced to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 1987, finishing sixth in stroke play and making the match play quarterfinals for the first time in program history. Three players in this week’s lineup – Chase Koepka, Rigel Fernandes, Claudio Correa – were a part of last season’s NCAA Championship team, which makes the expectation level much different for the Bulls this time around.

“Last year, with us hosting, first time being in NCAAs, we wanted the chance to compete and make match play, but I don’t think we necessarily expected it,” Bradley said. “I think going into it this year, there is an expectation that we’re going to make that top eight. Obviously we need to play well to get there, but I sense there is a different level of calm to it. We’ve been there before, so we kind of know what to expect.”

This week’s lineup also includes senior Aksel Olsen, who earned American Player of the Year honors after winning the conference championship. Sophomore Cristian DiMarco, the son of PGA Tour player Chris DiMarco, also will make his NCAA Championship debut after becoming a regular member of the lineup this season.

“The season Aksel has had, his confidence level is really high and I don’t think he is going to be intimidated at all,” Bradley said. “With Cristian, this stage is a little new to him and getting him comfortable as quickly as possible I think is going to be key to how he plays.”

USF traveled to Oregon early this week to get accustomed to a different time zone and a much different course than what the Bulls have seen all season.

“I know it’s tight and the greens will be fast,” Bradley said. “From what I’ve heard, it’s a really, really good golf course and it will test you not only off the tee, but your iron shots and your approaches. You have to control that and you’re going to have to make some putts.”

USF will play a practice round at Eugene Country Club on Thursday before teeing off at 5:10 p.m. (EST) on Friday. Check out round recaps, features and notebooks throughout the NCAA Championship on GoUSFBulls.com.

First round has begun.

USF has a late afternoon start time, which could be advantageous.

I hope the USF coach and his assistants are getting updates on how each hole is playing, because they have a good opportunity to do that, and plan accordingly.

Didn't the Golf Channel cover this last year?  Or was it just the Final 8?

If I remember correctly, I think they started live coverage only in the fourth round of stroke play when the field was cut to 15 teams. That's what they seem to be doing again this year. Look on the first page of this thread for GC TV coverage.
