GREENVILLE, N.C., MAY 15, 2016  The University of South Florida baseball team (23-28, 8-13 The American) erased a four-run deficit at No. 21 East Carolina on Sunday to claim a 6-5 series-clinching road win.

Pitcher Joe Cavallaro (Venice, Fla.) tossed 7.0 innings for the Bulls and designated hitter Luke Borders (Winter Haven, Fla.) broke a 5-5 tie in the sixth with a go-ahead home run.

It is the second series victory over a ranked team this season for the Bulls who also secured a series victory over No. 25 Michigan State on March 20.

“I thought Joe Cavallaro and Tommy Eveld, besides one inning, were outstanding,” said USF head baseball coach Mark Kingston, “and obviously Luke Borders with the big home run and a big day to help lead us to the victory.”

The Bulls went ahead in the second inning after outfielder Garrett Zech (Naples, Fla.) drew a bases loaded walk.

Down 1-0, No. 21 ECU (31-19-1, 12-8-1) responded with a five-run bottom of the second.

Trailing by four, USF cut into the deficit on a Joe Genord (Lake Worth, Fla.) two-run home run in the third. It was his fourth home run of the season and pulled the Bulls within two.

Rest of story

Our young position players are solid and they're getting a ton of playing time this year. Now we just need some pitching to go with it.

And we knocked them out of the top 25  "a series loss to last place South Florida"  No way I mean no way we should be in that category with how much baseball is played in FL.

Still disappointed with this year's team.

Based on what? Kingston's second year with a roster full of injured players, Lelo's leftovers, 1/3 of the team injured, and 7 freshman starters?

Based on the fact that this is the most underperforming program in the history of USF sports. Blaming injuries means we don't have depth. Kingston made it last year on Lelos "leftover" players so we will see next year. I think Kingston was a great hire however so I am optimistic.  Hope he can finally recruit some pitching this years has been terrible.

So you're not disappointed with this year's team since you agree with all of the reason why this team is doing about as well as expected. You're disappointed with the program.

Incorrect. I said I hate the excuse of injuries as it says you did not recruit depth or develop back ups.   The team is in FL and did not land the pitching it needed. In terms of the future I do believe that this is a good coach.

So what it boils down to is impatience?

Yeah, I guess 35 years with little success makes me impatient....
