Women’s Basketball Nabs JUCO All-American

TAMPA, FLA., APRIL 28, 2016  The University of South Florida women’s basketball team received more good news when Nachalie De Jesus joined the incoming class Thursday, head coach Jose Fernandez and his staff announced. De Jesus becomes the sixth newcomer added to the Bulls’ roster.

“I’m really excited to have Nachalie join our program,” said Fernandez. “I think she fills our immediate need for depth in the backcourt and her experience at Miami Dade College will give her a chance to make an impact early.”

De Jesus finished her second season at Miami Dade College as the Southern Conference Player of the Year and received All-Southern Conference First Team honors and All-State/Region honors. De Jesus was selected to the 2016 WBCA Junior/Community College Coaches' All-America Team, and was an NJCAA Honorable Mention.

Quick off the dribble, De Jesus was the top JUCO guard and ranked fourth in the nation with 21.8 points per game. De Jesus has the ability to spread the offense with her consistent three-point game, averaging 48 percent from behind the arc, which also ranked fourth in the country. De Jesus averaged 8.0 rebounds per game and led the Sharks at the charity stripe, averaging 74 percent, which ranked in the top five nationally.

Like many others on the Bulls’ roster, De Jesus is a member of Puerto Rico’s senior national team and played for the territory in the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Colorado Springs.

USF is looking to maintain its recent success despite the loss of the most successful senior class in program history. The Bulls signed four student-athletes during the early signing period and anticipate a few more additions to the roster. De Jesus will join Jazzmaine Bond, Tamara Henshaw, Shae Leverett, Dorottya Nagy and Enna Pehadzic in the incoming class.

CJF doing WORK!! Great addition--between her (48% 3s!) and Laksa, we might just have the splash sisters!

Might is the operative word.  Big difference between JUCO level ball and where USF plays.

Not as much guesswork when it comes to 3pt percentage, though. If you can hit from the 3pt line in JC, you can hit at D1. Yeah, you can talk about whether they can get as many open looks, but the distance is the distance.

So, who is leaving the program to make room for the 6 newcomers?

We're graduating Williams, Jenkins, Kroll, and Springfield.

You're right, but so are the players on our team that are that much better. Don't be so negative. Apparently no addition should be able to do anything in their first year, right? She's only here for two years anyway.

We'll be just fine. With this team at worst we make the NIT.

You could say this about any player whether it is HS or JuCo.

Were we using all available schollies?

I believe we were using 14 of 15 allowed by the NCAA.  Neena was the one not on scholarshhip.  As far as I know, Div I teams are only allowed 15 players on the roster  If so, to add six, one more player has got to go.

If Marcos is really leaving, Kroll was a walk-on, so we're good ...

Micah was on scholarship.  Regardless adding 6 would put the team at16 players which As far as I know would exceed the 15 player limit.

I'd have thought that a USF WBB fan would have known Micah Kroll was awarded a schollie this past season.

Website still had her a walk-on, which would make sense if she was granted a schollie during the year .... and also didn't know that WBB's roster limit matches their scholarship limit.
