If I had to guess I think attendance was somewhere from 18k-19k but there is no reason to fudge spring numbers so maybe it was 23K. Either way it's at least 3X as many fans as the highest attended spring game under O'leary

It's an acceptable past tense of spell. Spelled is more common in American English whereas spelt is used outside of the United States. It'd be unusual for a European writer to cover a football topic, but it's about poor spelling within an athletic department so who knows? Maybe he/she is non-American, or maybe just trying to be fancy.
