O’Neal is National Runner-Up in Triple Jump

USF senior becomes an All-American for the fifth time

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., MARCH 12, 2016 – With a proven history of stepping up in big meets, senior Matthew O’Neal did it again on Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex with a second-place finish in the men’s triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

O’Neal’s best jump of 54-5.25 was just shy of the national champion, Clive Pullen of Arkansas, who jumped 54-7.25 in his second attempt.

“I feel pretty great,” said O’Neal. “It was just a blessing to be here. It’s a great opportunity to give God glory. I did a good job of getting into the finals and then I did well in the finals.”

The Jackson, Miss., native fouled in his first attempt, but after landing a jump of 52-10.25 in attempt No. 2, he just kept improving. O’Neal jumped 53-0.25 in his third attempt to make the top nine and advance to the finals. His first of three additional jump was a leap of 53-10.25, which put him in second place. His fifth jump of 54-5.25 firmly secured his runner-up finish.

O’Neal had one more jump to pass Pullen, but jumped 54-2.50. As he always is, O’Neal was humble to be out there competing.

“I just thank God for being here,” said O’Neal, who got to compete in front of his mother and brother after making the three-hour drive from Jackson to Birmingham. “That’s the recipe for success, just give God the glory.”

O’Neal joined Kerine Black (1999-2001) as the only five –time All-Americans in program history. He also recorded the best USF finish of anyone at the NCAA Indoor Championships, besting Black’s third-place finish in the triple jump in 2000.

“I’m very happy for Matthew and Coach (Kiamesha) Otey,” said head coach Warren Bye. “I’m very proud of how he represents himself, his team and the entire athletic department. He is one of our most decorated athletes in USF history and I can’t say enough about the kind of young man he is and has been in these four short years.”

O’Neal will have a chance to become the program’s first six-time All-American if he qualifies for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June. He has qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships every season of his career.
