FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bulls Tame Tigers on Antigua’s Birthday

Morillo leads four Bulls in double-figures with 19 points.

TAMPA, FEB. 20, 2016 – USF capped off its best week of the season with another complete team performance in an 80-71 win over Memphis before a crowd of 3,840 at the Sun Dome on Saturday.

Nehemias Morillo led four Bulls in double figures with 19 points to help USF (7-21, 4-11) reach its highest conference win total since the 2011-12 Big East season. The Bulls delivered a win on head coach Orlando Antigua’s 43rd birthday after handing East Carolina a 69-52 loss Tuesday nightin Greenville, N.C.

“Trying to win on the road in the conference is really difficult. Whenever you’re able to do that, you hope to take that momentum and maximize that at home,” Antigua said. “I’m glad we were able to do that. We’ll see if we can continue it.”

After shooting 50 percent the past two games, Morillo continued to have the hot hand, going 6-for-9 from the field in another efficient outing for the Bulls. USF shot 46 percent (31-for-67) and connected on 51 percent of its attempts in the second half.

Freshman Jahmal McMurray scored 13 of his 17 points after the break and USF pulled away down the stretch. The Bulls went on a 7-0 run and extended their lead to 71-59 with 3:18 to play. USF put the game away with another 7-0 run and Angel Nunez’s acrobatic layup pumped the advantage up to 79-64 with 47 seconds remaining. Nunez was the fourth Bull in double figures with 13 points and the senior added eight rebounds.

“We’ve shown we can get it done against adversity on the road. We got it done today against a good Memphis team and it feels great,” said McMurray, who tied Morillo with a game-high five assists.

The Bulls got a huge boost off the bench from Chris Perry, who scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half and went 7-for-12 from the field. Perry returned to the lineup for the first time in seven games against ECU and helped USF outscore Memphis' bench, 29-16

“To have Chris playing the way he’s capable of playing for us is big,” Antigua said. “He’s another threat that we can have in the post or that we can pick-and-pop with the way he was shooting the ball outside.”

USF’s defense also put the clamps on a Memphis team that was averaging nearly 80 points per game. The Tigers (15-12, 6-8) shot just 36 percent (27-for-74) and Ruben Guerrero set a new career high with seven of USF’s nine total blocks. Guerrero added a game-high 11 rebounds to help the Bulls finish even on the boards with Memphis at 47-47.

“I can’t say enough about Ruben’s growth, development and maturity,” Antigua said.

USF eyes its first three-game winning streak of the season when it hosts UConn on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. (TV: CBS Sports Network). Reserve your seats at USFBullsTix.com.

“We’ve got two more games at home before we go on the road again. We just want to keep this momentum going,” McMurray said.
