Taggart, Flowers, Mack & Sanchez To Take Part In Annual Parade

TAMPA, JAN. 28, 2016  – Jose Gaspar’s ship has been spotted in Hillsborough Bay and the Annual Gasparilla Pirate Festival will hit full stride this weekend with Saturday’s pirate invasion and parade.

USF Football will be represented well in Saturday’s Gasparilla Parade of Pirates as Bulls' Head Coach Willie Taggart, record-breaking quarterback Quinton Flowers (Miami), two-time first-team all-conference running back Marlon Mack (Sarasota) and all-conference linebacker Auggie Sanchez (St. Petersburg) will ride and distribute green and gold beads on the “Bulls Unite” themed float.  The USF cheerleaders, Sun Dolls, Herd of Thunder “Horns Up” Show Band, and Rocky The Bull will join the USF contingent, positioned 8th in the parade.

The pirate flotilla shows up at the Tampa Convention Center between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday and the Gasparilla Parade of Pirates along Bayshore Boulevard runs from 2 to 5 p.m.  The parade route runs from Bay to Bay Boulevard north along Bayshore Boulevard into downtown Tampa, ending at Ashley Drive.

The parade will boast over 130 units – including more than 90 elaborate floats, 14 marching bands, over 50 distinct Krewes. More than 200,000 people are expected to attend the parade and surrounding events.

Coming off the program’s first bowl appearance in five years, USF returns school season record holders at quarterback, running back and wide receiver and four all-conference selections. The Bulls return 98 percent of rushing, 93 percent of passing and 86 percent of receiving yardage from a record smashing offense that posted school-records of 5,741 yards and 54 offensive touchdowns in 2015.

While the Bulls averaged 33.6 points and 441 yards of offense per game, the defense ranked in the Top 25 in the nation in interceptions (14th), turnovers gained (24th) and tackles for loss (13th), and in the top 35 of seven statistical categories. The Bulls return five of their top six tacklers (seven of the top 10) and players that accounted for 12 of their 17 interceptions and 16 of 25 turnovers gained.

I've never been to the day parade, and haven't been to the night parade in years, can anyone verify whether we've done this before? It seems like a no-brainer and great way to get exposure in the community. I don't recall hearing about it in the past, so if this is a Harlan or Taggart idea, kudos.

I don't recall us having done this in recent memory. I think it's a fantastic idea. We need to ingrain into Tampa that we are its hometown university, not the reptile school up north.

Back in the early 1990s USF was in the parade. I recall cheerleaders and a homemade Rocky.

This this 100% this. Tampa is filled with Noles and Gatas relocated and USF needs to put forth the extra effort to show the city what it's hometown University can do, both academically and athletically. Love the Team Tampa mantra and what it means. I just want to walk into any store around the University and not have to fish thru FSU and UF memorabilia to find the "basic" USF stuff. I know it'll be a long time before that happens, but love seeing the players and head coach manning a float and chucking some beads, if they are fans or not.

I don't recall it either. Love the idea, it would be great to expand on in future years to have even more of the team and some cheerleaders out there. USF should be a staple in community events.

First time I'll miss the parade in 5 years. Sucks I'll miss that, but fishing is a solid alternative.

I get anxiety around large crowds. Fortunately for me, it hasn't been an issue at our games lately.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
