Temple at USF: 5 things you might have missed

TAMPA — There were plenty of highlights in USF's 44-23 upset of No. 21 Temple on Saturday night as the Bulls clinched bowl eligibility for the first time since 2010. Here are five things you might have missed:

1. USF's defense didn't skip a beat despite missing Deadrin Senat, its leading tackler (40) on the defensive line, to an undisclosed injury. The Bulls held touted Temple RB Jahad Thomas, who came in averaging an American Athletic Conference-best 107.8 yards per game, to 65 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries. Junior CB Deatrick Nichols also intercepted dual-threat quarterback P.J. Walker at the start of the second quarter. Redshirt freshman Kevin Bronson made his first career start at defensive tackle in place of Senat and registered three tackles.

2. Rodney Adams tied Andre Davis (2014) and Elgin Hicks (2003) for the program's single-season record for receiving touchdowns with his seventh. The junior out of Lakewood High reached the milestone in style, nabbing a deep pass from Quinton Flowers in the first quarter and taking it 68 yards for USF's first score of the game.

3. With 230 yards on 21 carries, sophomore RB Marlon Mack equaled the USF single-season record with his sixth 100-yard rushing performance of the year. The feat was last accomplished by Andre Hall in 2005. Mack, a Sarasota native, also surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in the victory for the second consecutive season, becoming the second player in program history to do so.

4. Senior Mattias Ciabatti surpassed Brandon Baker's career punt yardage mark at 8,080 with a 32-yarder in the second quarter. That's nearly 5 miles for the Hillsborough High alumnus and three-year starter.

Holding Thomas under 100 was outstanding, the key to stopping them. And if that weren't enough, we rattled Walker and his WRs all night--his passes were either way off, or dropped for the most part. I didn't even feel threatened on that last drive!
