RIP The 5' Assassin

Yup, I was still holding onto a shred of hope that Phyfe, Tip, and Muhammad (maybe Jarobi) would have been able to put differences aside to drop another album. ATCQ will remain one of my favorite hip hop groups. On a related note, Guru's Jazzmatazz series doesn't get nearly the same props as Tribe, but it's just as fantastic.

I just saw this today...sad. Didn't realize he had health issues.

Phyfe had been struggling with diabetes for a while, although cause of death is yet to be determined, it wouldn't surprise me it was due to diabetic complications.

OT but kind of fits here .... I think. Am at a volleyball tourney in Atlanta and a team from Michigan has one of the best names I've come across .... The Notorious D.I.G.

All that free love caused some problems I believe.

They were good times. Sometimes I wonder if the Matrix was not a movie as much as a warning that we are about to be so intertwined with technology that it feels like we are part of a machine. I've been unplugged from Facebook and the rest of it for over 4 years now. I have an account but only because you need one to see what people are talking about when instead of sharing pictures of a trip-- they tell you to "just look at them on facebook". Yes-- wade through all the other garbage to find the pictures of our ski vacation or one specific photo.

And don't get me started on people who ONLY text and avoid actually having a conversation on the phone.

It is a different world and I can only imagine what comes next.

Social Media is like the new "Free Love" that Smazza was talking about.  It will come with a price too.

Our generation, Generation X, was the last to be free from the chains of Social Media but still be young enough to be able to have it influence our lives.  We have the most unique perspective and ability to see it for what it really is.  Older generations don't understand it/don't use it and younger generations have never lived without it/can't live without it.

I say all this however I am still the guy who gets stressed out if my cell phone breaks.

Have you watched the documentary "Beats, Rhymes, and Life"?  It was made before Phyfe passed but goes pretty deep into the group's troubles.

Jazzmatazz is awesome.  So was Gangstarr, Guru's original group.  RIP to him too.  MCA's gone...all the greats are leaving us.

Soon, we'll be left with only the 'Migos, Soulja Boys, and Young Thug's of the world.

Times they sure are a changing...

Yes, to your first question, and still held a shred of hope despite the group's documented issues. Regarding your 2nd comment, "Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!"

Reminds me of Lollapalooza '94.  Back when that concert actually had a purpose and was original.. and affordable too!  At about $30 a ticket for all.  Now its just another derivative money making surplus of excess. Ticket prices are now $335 for a regular 4 day pass or $120 for 1 day.

The line up back then for the main stage:

  • Smashing Pumpkins
  • Beastie Boys
  • George Clinton & P-Funk All-Stars
  • Breeders
  • Tribe Called Quest
  • L7
  • Nick Cave & Bad Seeds
  • Green Day

Plus some great bands in the side stages,  What a great show that was.

(People may argue that the high price is justified because it's now a multi-day event... But how many of those bands are just filler.  Plus simply compare the single day price now and back then.)
